Abandoned..... (Full Game V.90)

Postby Jegar » Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:24 am

On a Barren Planet known as Rine II in the Artemis Tau Sector a new research base and possible future colony have been set up. You joined the enlistment for the USP (United Space Program) and have been given a job on this new base. The first few days go fine everything runs smoothly on this backwater planet. However though on Earth Date, November 12, 2189 you wake up to find the entire station devoid of life. You wander around aimlessly until you find out that the base was set to base line functions and will not be able to support you in a matter of hours. Thinking quickly you manage to bring the base online only to find it is damaged from a slight storm on the planet. You have to keep the station going or you will die on this planet.

Abandoned Features:
-Manage a Colony on Rine II
-FULL Customs (Sorry just thought I would emphasize that)
-Manage the base's Power, Food, and Structural Stability (Very long word)
-(Something new in my game I am going to try) A score system
-Voice acted bioshock style Audio logs
-Crafting system

Story still a bit cliched, sorry. Needs more background info. But I like the fact that you're completely alone; gives that slightly eerie sensation. Perhaps you can enhance the creepiness with appropriate lighting and graphics.
HUD is too basic for something like this, change the font a bit; add some holders and all. Try to achieve a sci-fi look.

Graphics... well, it's hard to say. Good that you're using 100% customs, but it just doesn't look futuristic nor creepy enough, as your game aims to portray. More like a sterile environment, well; it looks like a hospital to me. Try tinkering around with the sprites and graphics a little, and try to achieve a more sinister feel.

Good attempt, and now on to some game-based questions: What do structural integrity and power do?
"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes."

I understand about the story it's kinda an afterthought mainly this game was just for me to play. I have a question though more back story about the station or the planet? As for creepiness you have yet to see the other 4 maps. Hud wise yes it is basic and that will be changed, the hud was added last most of the hud was in the main menu before that.

As for your game based questions
Structural integrity is the measure of how close the base is to imploding or having a severe leak. Power is more gameplay wise when the power is low you can't do some things like access areas or even call for help, it also turns most of the lights off and you will have to use your flashlight.

This looks like it needs puzzels. Like Dr. Brain!!! Maybe you walk up to a generator and you have to fix it by sorting out the pieces or pushing certain buttons in a certain order.

If they have to be small try playing around with parralex forgrounds and backgrounds so we're not looking at empty black space.

He posted those screenshots before .6 was released. I don't expect him to go back and edit all of his maps because a new feature was added, I think it looks fine now.

Just added something new, the ability to dump heat off a generator through a minigame, becuase I am new to minigames it's fairly simple, press the enter key while the dump heat icon is highlighted and walla you can dump heat and turn the generator back on.

Yeah its simple running the generator heats it up when the generator overheats its stops and starts autoclooing which takes longer so you can speed it up with eh heat dump.

Hey jeagur, instead of making 5 decent games, why don't you spend time perfecting one?

Your games come out pretty good and unique, but you just don't follow through and make them really good.

5? 4 maybe. Half Life RPG is done. Mainly people lose intrest in my games and with that they go away. I don't follow some through becuase of this, HL RPG however is on it's third DLC package, so that is good.

Just work on one, or at most two games at once. Try completing one before moving on, otherwise it'll get very messy, and the quality won't exactly show.

You should stick with this project, it looks pretty good. The new parallax background feature is good to show stars and commets you should try it out sometime. About the story, it's very unique, but it turns out to be kinda dull if you think you'll spend the whole game in the colony just fixing things. If you could add some alien invasion or similar action to the story it's gonna be far more enjoyable.
If you haven't tried out yet, check out my full game Voyage for Vengeance.
If you did but you're stuck, don't worry, there's a walkthrough available!

For those about to rock, we salute you.

wow, this game looks pretty promising. your main character kind of reminds me of something off of 'out of this world,' and for some reason, the game kind of reminds me of "overblood," which was actually pretty creepy. i think the game is going fine the way it is. i wish there was a download so i could accurately comment on your game. i'll be keeping my eye out for a download.

I found your WoW rpg to be great, if you woulda improved the graphics and fixed some bugs it would easily have been an 8.5 game.

The unique interfaces got me, Loved it so much. But you just didn't follow through and finish it up. This game sounds good, and your game making skills could do it easy. But if you leave it 80% done without going back over your previous work and perfecting it, its never going to be perfect.

Your could easily hop to the top 5 if you went back over some of your other games. Your a much better game maker then the 7 youve put out.

I was browsing through peoples games, and when I saw your screen shots, I fell in love. Seriously.

Even tho they are a bit on the more simpler side, which is not a bad thing, I really liked them. I haven't read your story yet, but your graphics have hooked me. Keep going on this, I wants a demo. lol

Oh yeah, I should probably read your story. lol

EDIT: OK I read your story, and it's unique. I like the features you have in the first post, I can tell this is going to be an interesting game. I'm watching this one.

Update:
Polishing the game play testing a lot. Came across a problem that isn't game breaking but is odd, animations on characters are coming out wierd because the animation for the character is a separate character and starts the animation partially through the whole thing. Any ideas otherwise if it is not bad the demo will be out then.

Try reducing the distance between leg movements during the walking frames, so the stop animation will not look so strange.

Possible, but you might want to refer to pictures to get the right leg contours depending on your style of art.

I downloaded your demo like three times, and everytime i tried to install it, there were .dll files missing that are needed to actually install and run the game. I would imagine if it was happening to other people, they'd have already said something, but I don't know. Maybe you should build your game again and re-upload it onto the site, if that's not too much trouble. It's just that i've been dying to play your game.

Does the second one look like a Nihilanth to you, or is it some form of alien sapient life?

Bit too powerful, don't you think? Something that kills you in one shot and has 100% accuracy?

There is no combat in this one. Number two might have it but in this your are a lowlife with hardly any gun skill. And the aleins are supposed to make you consider something before doing it. Otherwise unless you have a specific item to resist them you WILL die.

Update: Added a new thing.
A progress bar. When you do something the progress bar comes up and shows you how far until you are done.

This game does not disappoint. It's almost exactly what I imagined it should be like. The sound effects are perfect. The simple and almost colorless graphics fit the game perfectly. Although I was unable to complete your demo because of a script error right at the beginning of the game, I think it made it so I didn't have a flashlight, if you were to fix it, i would re download and play your game thoroughly. I'm going to try to beat it anyway, so I can rate it. At this point, I would definitely give your game a 10, because i think it's the best game on engine 001. Hopefully you continue to complete your game, because I know how hard it is to keep going. You shouldn't try to improve the graphics or tone of the game, because the way it stands is perfect. I can't stress that enough.

Brilliant gameplay. Definately different. I have to get used to how to play properly. Maybe you should add a bit more of a detailed map to outline the rooms and the functions within them. ;)

Thank you too!
I am thinking of adding a map like you said on the main menu under the controls thing explaining what is in each room, mostly I wanted you to not know and to experiment in game. Mostly because from a story perspective your character doesn't know everything off the bat.

Or possibly make labels above the machines which indicates a bit more clearly what they are for. If I was more aware of what I needed to switch on/off, I think I'd be able to live longer. I like your individual animations.

Here's what I think:
I played the demo. It's pretty good, but not very fun right now because I have absolutely no clue what's going on. You might want to break it down in the beginning or make an optional tutorial so people know how the base works. Labels would be good too. Simplify things at the beginning of the game so that people aren't overwhelmed.

The second point of improvement would be graphics. You need to make doors and passageways that are enterable blatently obvious and let people know where they go. Everything is very simple, but still unclear in terms of layout.

A BUG: I tried crawling through the vent to go to new places on the base (in a HUD) and was unable to even select the pipe that bends down (or south) even though the red bubl was blinking. You may want to check on the navigation through that interface. ;)

The layout is confusing and the system is confusing, but the game is still freakin awesome. I think it's a cool idea. It gave me some ideas for stuff. And the character animations; now those are what really make this game! I got eaten by a monster with a tentacle, worked on broken floor panels, shot by an alien, and fell over dead when the base oxygen ran out. The simplicity of the character really makes that aspect really fun. Not to mention funny random stuff like the mop bucket full of blood.
Hey, I compose custom music for games (for free). PM me about it.

An alien exploded my head with mind powers! You don't see that everyday! Good job. But yes, navigation is a key issue in your game. If you fix it, you will have a successful game.

Alright guys I have looked into to it, there WAS a tutorial in the game under the tab directions. That has been added a little more to. I have added for some objects icons like a lightning bolt for power and I explained the repair system. Also go up to most things and press the enter button I wanted players to experiment that's why I didn't take saving and loading out.

Fireleaf wrote:A BUG: I tried crawling through the vent to go to new places on the base (in a HUD) and was unable to even select the pipe that bends down (or south) even though the red bubl was blinking. You may want to check on the navigation through that interface. ;).

That's not a bug that area isn't done yet.

I have darkened doors to make them more visible.
And I have added little arrows on the floor to mark some areas.
And I added a bar on the hud that displays a location's name for a few seconds upon entering a area.
Also I little tip go up to everything and press enter. because crates and stuff were ignored by some of my local testers.

Well, I press ENTER, it asked if I want to fix, and I select YES. The man appears as though he is fixing the floor, and there is a progression bar, then after that, there is still a patch in the floor and I am unsure if it had any effect on the game at all?

Hmm...I think there are a lot of aspects about your game that confuse people. It's a shame, because I really want to stay alive! Haha.
How many different events are impacting on the game? The ones that is most clear to me is Power. If the power runs out, there is no air supply. But the others I'm not aware of or even know how to prevent.
Maybe you should list these, showing the player that you must prevent these things from happening by doing this or that.

You should make it so when you die, it gives you the option to load rather than just ending the whole game. That would make it a lot easier to want to keep playing after you die.

One of the things I noticed is that you can only see one thing that's happening at once. Let's say the power is reaching a low level. That message displays in the variable in your hud, but then you click on a box right after it show up so you may or may not have time to read the warning. Maybe you should have a seperate variable one for you and one for base operations. Here's a proposed layout I came up with just five minutes ago:

It makes sense but I have to remove some things. The heat thing is meant for only one thing and have it take up that much of the Hud is odd but I like the use of showing how far a variable can stretch before issues occur. The variable that displays the base and for you makes good sense I'll look into that for .33.

Update: An issue with the varialbe display for you and the base is how will it refresh for the next message? FIXED

Update: Alright here's a rough look

The more I play your game the more I realize one thing, its freaking amazing. There's so much to your game and it's obvious you put a lot of work into it. It is very difficult, but that is one of the appeals of the game. This is the first game that I've actually wanted to sit down and play. I haven't completed it yet, but I don't know if you would expect someone to beat it so quickly anyways. It is a very confusing game, and that's what makes it great. Because your game presents a challenge right from when you start walking around, you have to hurry and start fixing things immediately, and i found that the longer i survived the more amazing things i saw that you had put into your game.

Did you read the directions in the main menu?

Oh and thanks Sickness. As for the difficulty I am slowing down the power loss so that you don't die from that as quickly.

Update: A lot of people seem pissed about the difficulty. Here are some steps to help.
-Read the Directions on the Main Menu
-Consult the thread and see what other said
-Use the visual aid in game
-Experiment ingame there is a save and load feature for a reason
And on another note should I slow down the power loss so that you have a good amount of time to react and explore?

And As for this problem Should I put in Difficulty levels like easy normal hard?

I really like your games. Good Works. Just need more updates and you can make even better than this version.
My suggestion is that you just concentrate on graphics style. Try to make some brain storming ideas.
All the best for new version and I am waiting for you new version game.

My only gripe is to have more indication to where the doors are. I seem to find myself randomly teleporting from room to room. Could there perhaps be a tile or effect that lets players know where the teleport spots are? That, and perhaps some more logic to transition points from room to room. I go through a door on the left wall and walk in a door on a south door. Kind of confusing.

You could make pathways that indicate the trail to all the branching rooms in the one room.

Okay That sounds good and in the newer versions I have arrows on the ground for door indication.

I agree. Also, you have some door frames in the game that look pretty nice, but the orientation is confusing. Maybe you could make a universal entryway for doors that go to the right or left and ones that go up or down. (basically a side view and frontal view of the same doorway.)
Who should I really listen to?

I'll admit; your graphics are too messy and simplistic for my liking, but at least there's minimal clash with your own distinctive style. Nice interface usage, but some of the stuff protrudes from the interface boundaries. And once you get the basics done with, I strongly recommend you get to work on the details.

Intro Interface: I know it's hard, but can you find a way to centralize it instead of appearing up top in fullscreen?
HUD: Bit messy. You can always make the boxes much bigger, and the font a wee bit smaller. The hunger bar would do better outside; and you can utilize the in-game HUD by using the sides and bottom, which are pretty empty.
And given that it's a sci-fi game, maybe you can get a different font to make it look less bland.
Tutorial still didn't fully explain to the gamers. I had to figure out quite a bit by myself, and in the end I was still lost.
Some sections had problems, e.g. green lightbulb areas kept sending me to the same map.

However, the customs were simply breathtaking; the level of sci-fi replication and effort put into it is staggering. Can be better, but staggering.

And could you elaborate about the tutorial issues that is a biggy for me.

Great points Miv Thanks.

No the lines are just to distinct the outer tiles from the path. Keep the rest of the space, just with a path that helps the player to know where they can go. Ill give you another example for the break room in a sec.

Or maybe you can implement an objective-tracking system to show where are certain key points in the entire game map.

I have several different endings if you do things in game. Like if you call for help in the control room in the finished version by day 40 or day 80 you might get rescued.

I spoke to you about graphics before. It needed some shading, a little fine details (try working pixel-by-pixel on a smaller scale) and some of the objects' perspectives are a little off from the view you're presenting.
As with the Tutorial, the triggers were a little strange. While the generator's functions and all were quite well-explained, I had no idea what to do with the welding gear and structural integrity, how to traverse between maps, and with the computer near the first generator you encounter in the game. Perhaps you can explain the other functions as well, like what the gas pumps do. Basically, try to cover every aspect in the tutorial so the players know what to do for the foundations.

Good work with the paths, although, do some of the path tiles look slightly out of place to you? I'm referring to the T-intersection ones. They look as if they aren't lined up with the others. Or is that just the picture?
The new picture looks interesting. Outside the base, what will he find in the building???

Some of details are in the blog, but You will find a whole new module in the base, it controls the solar panels. That much I can say, it's a very small content patch but it required more work than I hoped, I had to draw the outside tileset and cliffaces aswell as the module itself.

And about the paths I do agree I think they got screwed up in the editing process I will look in to it.

Maybe you could integrate the tutorial text into the HUD, using Variable Operation to change the text in the field to what you want at any given time. This would mean people wouldn't have to wait for the Message Box to end to continue, while also the power is running down in the background.

It adds power over time so that you can turn it on and resume your other activites and still gain power.
And it plays a role in the Second Content Patch.

HUD looks lot better, but I'm still confused as to the big thing in the center.
And I did get to the ending where the food is contaminated, but strangely it leads me to some cutscene where this alien thing is on board, and you draw a rifle... didn't see what that had to do with food contamination, though...

I'm worried about all these releases you update. People will play it over and over again, until eventually, they get bored, and when you finally want them to play the completed version, they've already played half, or three quarters of your game.

Looks okay, to put it very bluntly. There's a few things I could say about graphical clash, but I won't trouble you too much. Godspeed, my friend.

Okay, um, most of your items have a somewhat blackish outline to them in the game. If you want to cut down on clash (you can't totally eradicate them), try to either give the sprites an outline of a darker shade (not necessarily black) too or remove the outlines on your items entirely.

Blackish outline? I see your point but looking at the sprites I don't see a darker outline on them. Oh well I can still try to fix them.

On another note: i am trying to add random fires that break out and I am adding another base fix to it, the use of a fires extingusher.

Update: found another bugger that prevents the game from finishing in the second content patch.
The fixes will be put up soon.

Also I am working on a hourly measurement in game that you lose power every hour rather than every 8 seconds, and you lose integrity ever 1/4 of the ingame day. So after 24 ticks or 120 seconds or 24 ingame hours you would have lost power 24 times, Integrity 4 times and don't worry I tested and on easy it takes about a day to die without doing anything and I still had left over for about two more hours, on Normal it took exactly a day. On hard I imagine it would take maybe half a day or two thirds.

Played the game - was fun but very stressful...(had to run a lot from the generator, repairing things and then there was the hunger) all the custom animations were cool.

He has a point... it's really a lot to manage, and the various statistics deplete at a relatively fast rate, for example structural integrity.

What difficulty were you on? Becuase I think it was set low on easy. If it is an easy I think you guys might be happy to know that the next version has some tweaks to the loss of structural integrity.

It was for all. Not exactly a good thing to be running from place to place too much even on easy. Much less needs to be said about 'hard'. Perhaps you still can tone down hard, but you can increase the frequency of random events detrimental to your base's status.

I played easy... my problem was the focus on maintenance of the base. of course this is the unique feature of the game but i merely had time to explore the base. I also ran out of money and I did not find out how to get more money for food - because I had to run back for maintenance. - I wasn't even good enough for easy.

Son of a bitch, man! This is one of the best 001 games ever! You've put so much attention to detail, attention to quality, attention to innovation. Screw Half-Life RPG, this is my favourite 001 game already! I've been thinking of bringing 001 to the attention of something like Rock, Paper, Shotgun for a while, and this seems like the perfect poster child.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the idea of this game is amazing and an excellent mix of different genres. Oh, and I just got tentacle raped. My score was -180.472634732723.

Well there was no active combat in the last game. Having a gun was more like a function in an adventure game. In the 2nd game it would be more like a typical 001 game combat system.

If I do include live combat the next question is:

Reloading frames or unlimited Ammo?

If it is going to be typical 001 combat, then I say no.
You should make it so that the character moves in intervals of 32 pixel squares, sort of like Pokemon or related.

Realy? Then that means that I am stuck using genericly sized items unless they fit in a 32 or 64. Basicly a computer that doesn't fit the 32 or 64 is gonna be unable to be centered for the player.

As for the Combat. I have functioning reloading frames already in one of my other games perhaps you should check it out.
It is called A Failed Journey.

Update: Abandoned 2 is starting now. I know it is a little late the date being June 21 2010.
Anyway a new thread has been made for suggestions for Abandoned 2. Either add suggestions here or Pm or to that thread.I'll link it when I am less bored.

So, played the game. Got a score of about 13000 before I slipped up and got myself killed.... It's an intense game, but it's a bit unclear to me as to how I'm supposed to end it.

Also, bugs in the "Death by Electrify" script and the Message that's supposed to tell me the Solar Panel has shut itself off.

Anyway, it's good. :)
