Gift of Vision

Postby Scaveleon » Fri Apr 29, 2011 12:39 pm

It's dark, and that's all it is.
Darkness first came to when its counterpart light came to.
Light came to through vision.
With vision I can see.
And I want to see the world.
Even if it is still very dark.

Your vision of anything is very limited, so you need to make a lot more use of your hearing than your ability to see. You will need to develop a instinct to the certain sounds in the game, which will help you far more than you vision will.

The whole world is a 2D sidescroller, and the goal is simply to complete increasingly difficult levels.

If you can't learn from your mistakes and adapt to your surroundings, you won't last long. The game is intentionally hard, so know that I don't expect anyone to complete the game.

Sorry, no screenshots because there really isn't much point in it IMO.

I can't present anything directly from the game at this time, I'm sorry. At the moment I am still fleshing out some basic obstacles. Most of the obstacles in the game are already known to the creature we control, so they will be introduced to you in an optional tutorial.

After that, I need to tweak my visual resources, and at last I can work on sounds from there. Since there is a huge visual handicap, sounds are pretty obligatory for the concept of the game to work out.

As for the obstacles, here they are:

Falling Spike
- Standing under one will make a crumble noise and make the screen shake. After a delay, it will drop, and if it missed the player, it will knock him in the air.

Slimes
- Creatures on the ground that can hurt you when touched. They make noises whenever nearby.

Spikes
- Plain, stationary spikes. There are no sounds associated with these.

Water
- Our creature can't swim. You can hear a soft lake sound when nearby.

Snakes
- Poisionous snakes that can reach out for you from the walls. Once you are detected, they will ready their poision and after a delay, latch out after you and die right after.

Bomb
- Soundless. If they are touched, they explode. They can be detonated by other means however.

Soulsnare
- An flame that is only visible when attacking fiery souls, such as your own. It will play an animation on your character as well as giving a loud noise. During this delay, you need to find a spot where you can stand still for a few seconds without getting hurt. After the delay, any movement for a second will cause instant death.

As for your powerups:

Power Flame
- This flame allows you to jump higher.

Restoration Flame
- This flame grants you an extra life.

Transfusion Flame
- This flame will make nearby bombs explode and heal the player's health for it.

All powerups can be heard from a reasonable distance. The distance varies depending what is optimal for the level.

sounding really good so far, and when you say limited vision what do you mean, do you get a small circle of vision or everything is really dark or something?

Something... like this.

http://www.engine001.com/games/Precision+Marksman_318.htm

It's a sidescroller though. And even what you can see in the circle is also only in dark shades of yellow.

Nowhere, unfortunately. When lightning hit the road a month ago, I was without internet for 3 weeks, which in some ways was essential for the project to come along. I'm also going through exams at the moment. Not a good combo at all. I think it's fair to leave this out of the contest.

Does your bomb thing affect other NPCs? If so how do you do that script if I may be so bold?

Well, I had some slime running around, and I planned to make bombs affect them too. I don't remember if they do, I don't think so. I'm a little lazy to look for it myself. I'll send you the project over PM... And to anyone else who wishes to have a look.
