Zombieland

Postby nate50 » Sat Jan 22, 2011 5:18 pm

This is my first effort at making a game. Here is my Intro:

Mine is not finished yet but it is definitally playable. As "zombies" seems to be a common theme here I joined in started my own taking humor from the popular movie "Zombieland" Here is how it goes. My son and I actually live in Garland where the movie starts out. I used a Google map of the city and based roads rater and building locations roughly where the really are. Building construction improved a lot from first map to now. The IPod plays songs you find and the TV plays clips of Family guy. Game is bases on a period of time when "Stephen" my son is learning Rules of survivl in Zombieland. There is a Quest journal, Rules journal, Title system for earing prestigious ranks as your zombie count go up. that is based on acient Roman military Rank system. There are kill quests, collect quests, and escort quests. Lots of roaming zombies that get harder as you progress. When you learn a new rule there is a cutaway to a scene from the movie and the actual rule is listed. Music sounds and resources have been found on the web. Of course cars explode if you shoot them too much but they are great for plowing through herds of zombies. there are a sprinkling of survivors that give quests and move the story along. Clues are sprinkled about to get into certian areas, Crowbars usually bust open coke and candy machines for a sugar rush. If you need keyboard help like I did coming from a mouse driven world I put in an old style PacMan game with 3 levels where you pick up ammo and the ghosts are zombies of course. For weapons training you have to see "Tiny" at B&S Guns who will let you try out every gun available at no cost. BTW Flamethrowers are great on zombies. Dont shoot the living people cause the remainder of the town is populated by Rednecks and Germans that believe from the ashes the South will rise again. I think the maps are good but I just learning about layers and how to use GIMP. Havent done character creation screen yet. Working with Party members is just getting started. Ultimitally you will get to blow up a highschool filled with zombie students and staff and figure out that military screwup could have started the whole mess. Lots of mystery though and once your up to level 15 or 20 or so I will be time for Chapter two. Anyway its still in development so only half the town is done. And oh yea I cant get the day night thing to work right. 12 hr clock on the HUD is fine but wants to throw these warnings about endless looping scripts, you will die a lot but autosave is on maps and building enters. You get 3 retries if you get in a mess. You can rezz back to your apartment or go into zombie mode and explore without having to fight all the time. Its 46 MB right now so just need to know how to upload and yall can try it out and give me some hints.

Wowzas! This looks quite intricate. As much as I hate zombies, Zombieland is actually among one of my favorite movies. How did you pull off the DVD watching? Tons of frames from a video saved as dynamic objects?
Who should I really listen to?

Nice construction. I love Zombieland. Would be the greatest zombie movie ever if it weren't for the annoying main character.

Some of the graphics clash a bit but that isn't going to stop it from being a good game.

Is there going to be a Cameo by Bill Murray(the greatest actor of all time)?

Oh no, another zombie game (facepalm). Looks like it's quite far along though. Blowing up a school is questionable. May want to add a note somewhere addressing that somehow.
Hey, I compose custom music for games (for free). PM me about it.

The video was kind of hard. I tried animated gif's and several attempts at frame based animation. In the end I just used a video splitter to cut the mpg into one sec samples and saved each as a png. Then I added them to the game as effects and scripted to change a field effect in an interface every second. They are sinced with the sound track but the sample rate is too high to actually look like a movie but it was the thought that counted.

Yea I am wrestling with that as it kind of pushes the envelope of political correctness. Might be better to draw all the zombies in the school out to the center of Lake Ray Hubbard and then use the Power Plant at the far end of the lake to dump a couple billion watts of power into it. But then Fish and Wildlife will be on my back for killing all the fish not to mention Greenpeace.

Well then they might as well only play racing games, because something dies in almost every game. Besides, if he doesn't put fish in the lake, it's just the zombies who will die. No one is forced to play the game, so if they don't like the idea of something, don't play it :P

Anyway, this looks pretty neat. I like the Rule Book especially, nice work. :)
