Super Duper Mario (Last Update: Redone Soundtrack)

Postby Koutacles » Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:15 am

Due to the nature of the NEW games section up top, this topic is now just discussing the game and telling me how to improve it, what you liked/hated etc.

LAST UPDATE WAS:
9th May '08 - Soundtrack replaced with MP3s

Coming Soon:
::Updated HUD
::Finished intro

Known Bugs:
::Bananas don't work - they are Proximity weapons that should be limited to 3 in the field at one time and they also don't explode when a character gets near 100% of the time.
::Using Walk to Location on a player character causes the walk animation not to play.

Wanted Features:
::More control over character AI - especially (or at least) being able to set how far AI enemies 'see' their enemies

It was a fun game. :P I killed Luigi and got a lot of stuff. Also I found your secret passage, very nice.
I liked your sprites and that you took blood away, Mario doesn't have blood. :D
If you haven't tried out yet, check out my full game Voyage for Vengeance.
If you did but you're stuck, don't worry, there's a walkthrough available!

For those about to rock, we salute you.

Eventually I'll work in a simple Princess-been-captured-so-get-x-amount-of-special things-from-bosses-to-save-world storyline. Probably Princess Daisy for a change.

Also, more door sound FX have been added (if only there was a On Door Finished Closing event) and Luigi has been given proper sprites (as I don't need to make a walking animation for him) - though he will be replaced by a Toad later as he has a different role.

Here's a free resource for anyone interested:

New version uploaded, ZIP'd to compress it to 5MB instead of 8.5MB. It adds the beginning of the Eastern area, the Forsaken Forest (no screenshost of it yet - I'll add that later). There's an amazing bridge that appears out of nowhere - holy crap that took ages!

Ok, I tried out your new demo, and when you go to open the doors on peaches castle(from the middle of them) only the right one opens. Then when you try to open the left one, the sound plays, but it like you are in the way of the door and it doesn't open, and you are stuck.

Other than that, the Forest of Illusion or whatever was really nice addition, I liked how you did that bridge, and I am jealous. I also like how you have the dark light at the very last part of it pulsating, that was pretty cool.

Re: Super Duper Mario

Postby Koutacles » Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:40 pm

Yeah, I need to play with that - the doors don't lead anywhere yet though so its no biggie.

There isn't much control over visibility of effects so the bridge is made of 'Bridge' characters that are brought into existence then killed so that they are under the player, the only problem being some weapons go under them. It'd be better if when you Played Effect you could set which layer they were on like the ones you just put into maps (or the placed ones had toggleable visibility).

Right now the annoying thing is that most of my characers are just Bodies so when they attack unless using a melee weapon they don't play their attack animation and thus look silly. Also, jump height of characters is not adjustable so mario jumps crazily high comparitive to his size and due to the smallness of everyone else when he jumps on them he 'floats' over thier heads.

The first 'secret cave' is now guarded too, and there is a 1UP Mushroom hidden in the underground. The next version will have coins and Mario's proper sprites.

Hmm, can you make it to where coins heal you on pick up(Like in Mario 64), but still stay in your inventory(but not usable in inventory)?

Or are you just to keep it old school and they just give you 1 ups on 100.

Gold keys will eventually be held by an enemy near the start of a new area or obtained through a quest - they are used to open new areas that lead to bosses etc.

The last version uploaded had a Gold key near the door in the forest - the door needed it.

Yeah I should really get rid of the random one near the door, that was just for when I was testing. Soon the underground will be locked (as it will lead to an underground/lava area), Luigi will be removed, and the Mansion finished (next version will have the Mansion at least - I hope you like the effects in there)!

Various areas (especially the Mansion and Peach's Castle) have been updated - the credits room in the castle is underway. Inside is me! You can say things like coin, kills or just random things.
Also go west and see the start of the mountain area - don't fight the moles, just keep running until you reach the top!
Next is the sprites of townspeople.

A slightly newer version has been uploaded, adding these things:

-Infinite loop effect if you escape out the back of the mansion (doesn't work 100% due to lack of being able to set exact X,Y co-ords of player)
-Small town added
-Normal Toad NPCs added in some places
-Peach's Castle now goes back even further --- check it out!
-The credits room in Peach's Castle has been tweaked a bit --- try saying different things to me and see what happens! (I'm meant to have curly hair but its hard to make :P)
-The Underground's door now leads somewhere (not much in there though)

Still waiting on next 001 version for all the neat new features and fixes --- then there'll be even more done! Still to come is the addition of more townspeople NPCs, the scripts in the town and more mountain area and mansion stuff.

Huh, Mike hasn't commented at all since his initial reaction (first reply award too!) --- the game's gotten even better since then so I'd love to hear what he thinks, especially with the odd use of dead characters as the bridge across the red water in the forest.

So I know Mario is copyrighted and all but just to say really this game is pretty fun so far and if it was like a big game when done I would have to say a game of this calibur I would pay a little money to play. I mean it coule potentially be that sweet, really coming along nicely

Obviously, I can't 'sell' it or ask for money for it, but being free and stating in the credits that Mario etc. obviously don't belong to me, usually companies don't mind. Usually.

Alternatively, when done I could re-do all the graphics in a different non-Mario style and then try and sell it, but that'd be kinda silly.

So, what's everyone's favourite bit so far?

There isn't a desert area (yet). Did you mean the mountain or beach?

New version uploaded:

-Can enter town shop
-Can enter mountain shop (with new NPC)
-Intro mode
-New room in Peach's Castle
-Goombas can be jumped on

In the character Goomba, in the Trigger 'Touched by Playable Character', set a comparison branch to check if Char("P0").Z >= 1 then subtract x health from 'this' and play sound or whatever.

(My opinion) you should make it so you have to be within like 1/2 a foot to a foot for the goombas to attack you , instead of 4 feet. Also, the mole things by the muddy area (I thought that was sand) should be able to be killed. lalala.

You might want to ask Miroki or Mike for the goombas sight thing.

Goombas in all the mario games never purposely try to go for you. However, there's no way to reduce sight of enemies yet.

Grrrr...Well, for now, at least lower their attack, it seems that you can die too easily from GOOMBAS yep thats it.

..They die in one hit if you jump on them, but yeah Mario does need more health from changing XP so you level faster.

EDIT: Also due to the lack of RAM (just about 256 MB) on the laptop Im stuck with at my flat, although sprite editing is just fine as is internet speed, Map001 and Engine001 run like crap as I cant drop the test map / game settings to low in Map001.

About the goomba things. I agree with Mike how they don't go for you. I had an idea to stop them going for you and killing you. Simply turn AI off and put them on routes that go back and forth a few times.

How about this.

Keep AI On.. But make them neutral. Then on the Hit By Playable Character Trigger Make him change Teams and go to bad

yeh, thats a good idea too.

Just wondering, how did you script the goombas so that you can jump on their heads and kill them, but if you touch them any other way they hurt you? (I'm thinking about making a mazza game)

New version out when I get some stuff in my life sorted out first -- hopefully that means soon! ;)

EDIT: Stuff's getting better, made some simple ( but noticeable! ) changes and disabled access to the rest of the intro while I work on it. Expect another Edit when it is uploaded!

EDIT2: Found the time to replace (most of) the soundtrack with MP3's and add a pipe and not a door as the entrance to the underground (press enter to use pipes).

Wander around and tell me what you think of the new music!

The intro's nearly done. Still plenty of bugfixes though, mostly items.

Hopefully you'll like the intro. I think it has some humour to it.

Well, I'd say good luck to you, then.
P.S. Try playing through the game yourself; you'll find some really unexpected bugs.

Yeah, I know. Lots and lots to fix.

...Starting over wouldn't be a bad idea, as it would fix a whole bunch of things in one go.

The intro sets up the story (of course), that Bowser breaks into Peach's room just as she's about to give you a special gift and is taken away to World 8. As she gets taken away, her present gets smashed and Kamek takes and hides the Warp Whistle parts. And so begins Mario's adventure.

Personaly i dont see a reason to get rid of your old work, other then the 2 or so bugs. if you did you would get less gameplay done, which for me would suck.

Have you used the original mario's sprite? Or you made your own?

Well, I don't know if I did something wrong or something else, but:
1) Koutacle's box works, but it doesn't work, public boxes are no longer allowed (at least the last time I checked)
2) There is no intro
3) The sound "heres the star" is not set as a sound
4) The door "tounderg" cannot load
5) Going all the way upstairs just makes a black screen, and
6) Well, there is no 6...

EDIT:

Well, I uninstalled the game, deleted the folder that it was in, reinstalled the game, played it, got 2 "runtime error 75" issues, tried playing again, went upstairs, got a black screen, and checked the ERROR file. Here it is, in small type.

Script Error in Map: MushroomKingdom
Event: 0 Compiled Line: 0
Set 0 to ("tounderg")[Door]OpenFuture
Error: Door "tounderg" is not loaded.
Script Error in Zone: incastle
Event: 2 Compiled Line: 0
Call ("main")[Char].("PeachsInside1", 624, 592, 0, 0, "Up")[Position2]
Error: Cannot play sound "Heres The Star" as it is set to be played as a sound.
Script Error in Zone: 2
Event: 2 Compiled Line: 0
Call ("main")[Char].("PeachsInside2", 656, 912, 0, 0, "Left")[Position2]
Error: Cannot play sound "Heres The Star" as it is set to be played as a sound.
Script Error in Zone: uppstairs
Event: 2 Compiled Line: 4
Call ("P0")[Char].("PeachInside3", 336, 112, 1, 0, "Down")[Position2]
Error: Cannot play sound "Heres The Star" as it is set to be played as a sound.

Probably caused by the fact this game is so old. I'd have to remake it sometime in a newer version to ensure it works properly. Sorry about that.

If you go through it and fix it up, I'd be happy to move it to the completed games section.
