Question: Now that I have made much progress in skill, should I remake this game with better UI and handling?

Now I know that most of you hate a remake/copy/rip off, of a game but I had a huge hunger for half life so I though why shouldn't i make a rpg based on it. Besides If my game sucks that doesn't mean VALVe sucks it just means I suck. But anyway, In The half life RPG demo I have you can ........
choose gender and name (you play as a resistance)

Combine custom heads (front view needs work)
Fixed up guns that look like HL2 weapons
Sounds from HAlf life
Custom Xenien animals
Ability to join CP and help resistance from within or destroy with CP aid
four alternate endings at this point

If you at all thought this was cool you may hate me for this but I can't release the demo yet because I am working out bugs so you don't have to deal with them.

Not bad, really. A pretty good idea.
And I'm not really against a remake in 2D, just remember to add more elements that ARE in Half Life, and not completely unrelated. A good remake(not spin-off) must be nearly identical, if not exactly identical. If it's a spin-of/continuation, add in your own original elements (resources, plot etc.)
Yeah, your graphics are good, but you need more detail in the art. Tried Photoshop lately?
But what turns me on is the features and idea.
It's a good idea, and further development can result in a good game, too.
Keep working on it, and if you need to, feel free to ask for help.

Wow, you have pretty good resources! :) One thing is that the bottom screenshot has paint-drawn resources(atleast it looks paint-drawn to me) don't match with the "real-looking" green supply box.

All in all, it looks real nice except for what I mentioned above :]

I will definatley play this once it's out. I've beaten all the half-lifes and can't wait to play more of it. I suggest thinking for features by yourself. Asking us mean you have no direction of where you game is headed and your not sure what to do with it right now. If your really in a tight situation try playing other 001 games and Half life game (real ones). They should fill your head with a lot of things.

Yes I am aware of that, It was mostly to show players you "can" pick up the green boxes, but I may change this.

What you say makes sense, but the reason that I asked is that I have played Hl1-Hl2 EP2, and I have hit a writer's block on newer features.

I like the mix of drawn and 3d stuff put together. Looking very good so far, with some cool plot it's gonna be a kickass game. :)

Update: The demo will be relesed soon, but the plot for the game doesn't kick off until you do a certain thing. Long story short the demo has little to no plot. :x

Thats ok just make sure its in the final game ;) you should be able to choose between the combine or resistance and run into characters such as Gordon Alex ect. Side quests are good to ;)

I am currently brainstorming plots, but I don't think ill have you run into gordon or alyx because the game takes place in city 12. right after gordon's strike at nova prospekt. But I have ideas to run into characters from the game. Also the demo has little to no plot becuase its is the begining stages of the game the plot gets bigger after that stage, but the demo ends right befor that. Oh yes Also I have one side quest that's repeatable and it's in the demo, you can trade headcrab hides for $20 a pop. But thank you for the good ideas and comments.

Nice :D if you think about it tho most of the comunication in HL is through video comunicators you could have those in your game. Also the dorp ship should be bigger.

I've did antlions and barnacles before (the barnacles are a little... difficult to script).
Try adding barnacles to make the puzzles more interesting.
And I don't mean aquatic-life barnacles.

And in half life opposing force theres monsters that shoot electrizity at you and when you kill them there gun comes to kill you.

Oh, one-eyed? Vortigaunts. Jegar, did you add them too? Btw, ammo, these are your allies in HL2.
Barnacles can be dispatched of easily with a crowbar. Perhaps Jegar could script a different damage system for barnacles (more damage for some wpns).
Good luck on the progress, man. I think it'll turn out great.

I toyed with the idea of vortigonts but not yet made them.... ALso I now have a new weapon: .357 magnum. and I have shooting frames so guns have kick when shooting them, and (sorry for all the ands) I have also addedMore pics from half life gor my ingame things. Ammo boxes ETC.l....


Update: Demo is realesed but this is the DEMO not the game I still have more to do.

Like i said demo.....l. But good idea I'll do that right now oh and I am going to release the demo v.2 wich has a small part of story twards the end.


On another note did you guys raid the combine base i put in?

Also could you make me a list of things that you didn't like so i can fix or change them?

The game can't end after the toutorial and after you die then people wont reload and try again :) other than that I thought it was great the game starts rather sudden though you just randomly appear in city 12 you should have some back story on how you got there.

Update fixed the enemy shooting you when you die and changed the intro system. Also added some back story.

I have experimented with this concept in another game and wanted input from you, do you think in certain areas the Ai should have a daily routeen EX: eat sleep work..........?

Does anyone else have trouble loading saved games?

Unlike most games, when I get killed, the game just stops rather than allowing me to load. When I try to load, any slot I've saved says that the game could not be loaded.

Anyone else have this?

Not that I know.

What MIGHT have happened is that I did download an older version a and then uninstall it. PERHAPS it retained the saved games and then had trouble loading a slot.

I'll uninstall, remove the saved game folder, and reinstall and let you know...

I have read your posts on the save issue, I too have this problem and am not sure what to do.

I am able to retrieve sounds from Half life and it's source mods directly but thank you.


Update: Slightly figured out the save problem, if you have played a previous version and saved, it would not load, simple fix, just save over the old saves this might work.

I played the edition released yesterday (I think that's 7). The endings are either to let the nuclear plant blow up or to cool it down and save the world. I played both and it says to be continued.

The new one I think has a new gun and less quest errors.

Now why would you be putting TF2 stuff into this? Don't you think the red shirt who sold you weapon components was pushing it enough?

Don't get me wrong, though. I've always been excited by the possibility of you finally finishing the game. :D

I actually took out the redshirt but yes I thought it would be funny and it gave me more ideas because of the Orange box bundle. And if you guys liked that I have more planned.

Keep in mind that what I am about to say is not in any way shape or form sarcastic:

Put in the TF2 weapons and stuff. I love how cheesy the game is. It reminds me of the golden age of 001 when everyone was making games. :D

Edit:

Just got to properly play the new version. Saving doesn't work, so that takes a lot off my opinion of the game, and the shotguns are completely underpowered.

Well, I'd always return to see how a HL 001 Remake is coming along. Better than I expected, in any case.

Sounds interesting, though some of your resources have a very strange orientation. Your boxes look very strange from a slightly-top down view. So do the barrels. Maybe try editing them from a different perspective.

Doesn't look like one; but what does the (LOL WUT) Dispenser do? I don't remember seeing any in the original Half Life; only Team Fortress 2 or such... And I don't think metal will be of use unless you have a crafting system.

If you look earlier in the posts I started adding weapons from other VALVe games to give a more silly feeling. Metal is just a sellable. and the dispenser does what the tf2 dispenser does give metal and health and ammo.

Maybe you could incorporate some puzzle elements into it. Somewhat Portal-ish, but without the Portals themselves; so that players won't always be hacking, slashing and grinding.

The scripting elements ARE unique, but it's quite complicated. I agree, maybe it may not be the best idea, but if you can develop one it may be of some really good use.

Alright, nice! I've wanted to see the Combine storyline expanded!

Edit:

Just tried out the new version, and the new race selection feels a bit lackluster and the caucasian skin could just have been the default one. The new menu feels out of place and just makes it hard to change equipment. The fact that the default race is now hispanic despite there not being an option for that in the race selection menu just seems weird.

Just make sure that when you add it in the graphical aspect doesn't clash too much. TF2 and HL2 don't have the same art style.

Oh ya. Mainly I am not worried though most of the seriousness of this game left long ago. Of course my humor sucks.

It's alright. But if you want humor, try adding in more of these elements so that it fits in.

Well, at least it makes Half Life less monotonous. Still, limit your extent of humor; don't make a laughter sound everytime the G-man appears or something.

Don't need to make the entire story word for word, really. Just no clashing elements in the story, and I'm fine. For instance, if you want to make this after HL2L: Episode 2, don't make Eli Vance fight by your side.

Most canon characters are not in Half Life RPG only Gregori and thats because VALVe said they were done with him.

Update: Half Life RPG's next patch.

-Fixes equipping screen not allowing unequipt
-So far three new items
-Fixed Error in A rebel camp spamming Combine Errors
-Fixed Barrel Tile to look correct with dimensions
-Making it so Health kits are sold at second Rebel camp

what title said i countied when when i press a "enter button" at where after the heilcopter crashed it automactialy quit and i can't save too please fix problem becurse i want to play half life 2 and you do same like real one! 5/5

I believe some left 4 Dead weapons and enemies have been added but I am not sure, dabbiling in the new version of 001 has resulted in a lot of data corruption.

2 years later from the last post. I love the idea for Half-Life :D
Funny thing you should know, that i was thinking of making a Half-Life fangame, but u beat me to it. I dunno if i can ask but, i want to take permission from you if i can make my own half-life game, so i dont soind like im copying you or anything. Btw is the game still downloadable? Cause i havent seen it yet on the page of the games. If its not on the engine001.com/games please tell me where can i download it.

Half Life RPG has died, a new reboot might be possible but I am not sure.

As for my permission? I don't own the Half Life Franchise so by all means make it.
