If you need a new windows xp CD, go to your next computer store and ask if they have Windows XP Professional discs left. They are very cheap now. one or two weeks ago I read an article in the internet which said that windows xp professional is now sold for 20 Euros in germany. I think in other countries it might be the same or similar. Just to mention, you can get a new windows xp cd very cheap since the 22nd October 2010.

Check your modem for strange activity. Exit all of your programs that use the internet, and if your modem lights are still flashing like there is a lot of activity going on, you might have a virus that is constantly downloading crap onto your computer.

Also try CCleaner. It's a free program that cleans out all of the crap, hence why it's called CCleaner(Crap Cleaner).

I've also used a program in the past called Eas-tech Eraser or something like that that once freed up about 13 gigs on my 80 gig hard drive, but I wouldn't know where to find it for free because it's not a free program.

Honestly if it's not a virus, it sounds like a program that's gone haywire and is eating up your space. CCleaner could very well fix that. Or what Mike said.

Also, I have noticed that XP does have a bit of fluctuations with the amount of free space. When I had XP, sometimes I'd see that some free space had just randomly gone (and with dial up at that stage, you can't blame that for the sudden change :P) and then it would randomly come back. Wasn't to do with the temp files. It wasn't as big a fluctuation as yours though.

As SBG said, CCleaner could be useful.
Perhaps that installer that froze had put a lot of data in the temp folder that it didn't delete. Maybe.

Or have a look at your modem's/ISP account's usage, to see if large amounts of data have been downloaded recently.

He didn't mean memory as in processes, he meant disk space.

I've had disk pace fluctuate on me too, even with Vista. One minute I'll have 11 GB free, then i'll check the next day and it'll only be 7 GB.

Did you look in the windows downloaded programs directory?

Some browsers and downloaders create a temp file while downloading and I've noticed few times where if you cancel the download the temp file isn't deleted. You could try searching your HDD for a file of the same name as the one you were downloading it would usually have a different file extension though.

CCleaner and even the normal windows disk cleanup should fix that.

Be very careful with file cleaning software - there's been some known to delete .1ST files, which are very important files used by 001.

C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp

This is where temporary or uncompleted downloads should be stored.

Guys relax, its normal. Windows uses memory for pagefile size. Open your task manager go to "performance" and look at your "PF" usage size. Mines 1gb. Notice when you boot in safe mode, the memory comes back. Because safe mode dosent use much PF. running programs take memory as well. One reason Windows 7 and Mac OSX as well as linux are more superior, because they run programs in a sandbox thus using small bits of HDD memory. Windows constantly stores and deletes temporary files. When you delete a file, its usually stored somewhere. CCleaner does indeed fix that.
