Disinfector 001 (Take 2) [A Lil Question For You All...]

The Disinfector Project is back, and is ready for a complete revamp. For those of you who didn't know what it was about, here's a (not so) quick synopsis. Those who do remember what it was, I recommend you re-read the synopsis, 'cos it underwent major changes.

Synopsis:

Mike Weir and Pierre Cayer began the 001 project as what was then known as Codename 001. Codename 001 was made to showcase the power of the 001 engine, dubbed "Engine001", which wasn't very much back then.

July 2006
Engine001 rose to fame as Mike and Pierre revamped the engine, which attracted more and more people. By this point, the site was receiving 3000 users a day.

November 2011
It was discovered later on that Engine001 was in fact, not merely a means to create games - it is actually a thinly-veiled portal to another world - named by Mike, who had found it by accident, the Dreamsphere. The Dreamsphere is a physical embodiment of... well, dreams. All the users it had come into contact with by means of the 001 Engine have their dreams, memories, emotions and fears manifest themselves in this other dimension.The Dreamsphere also had bits and pieces of everything made and scrapped by the Engine manifest themselves in it, and thus whatever was created through the program became a reality in the other world. This was completely fine, for the time being, and Mike kept the existence of the Dreamsphere secret should anyone have funny ideas about abusing it.

December 2012
001 shot up to even greater success as it slowly became one of the most powerful engines in existence - overpowering even those of pay-to-use engines. People have offerred to buy the now-influential engine off Mike, but in fear of the Dreamsphere's rediscovery, he refused.At this point in time, the Dreamsphere was filled with many different things - the weird, the wonderful, and everything else in between. It empowered the engine - and vice versa. Until SOMETHING went wrong.

January 2015
Mike discovers that something was seriously wrong with the Dreamsphere - more and more of 001's creations that have manifested themselves turned out warped, completely mutated. Now at this point, there were millions upon millions of doomsday predictions - one of which saying that "beings from other worlds will invade our dimension and place us in eternal oblivion," which bears great resemblance to what was happening within the Dreamsphere - the manifestations were hostile towards any and all who entered the world.

Frightened by this prediction, Mike set up a five person task force to eliminate these manifestations - which were now classified as 'viruses', and have frightening powers. They were equipped with Disinfectors - manifestations of their dreams, hopes, emotions and personalities, also from the Dreamsphere, that are proven to have similar powers to the viruses.The five person task force consisted of Mike himself, Pierre, Stephen Chapman and two relatively anonymous people under the aliases 'Ammohead' and 'Peppy2006'. They did well, until both Pierre and Ammohead went missing.

January 2016
The Disinfection task force progressed well over the past few months - until they lost two of their members. The team's power was drastically weakened while the viruses kept getting
stronger and stronger. Fuelled by fear and desperation, they decided to recruit more members into the task force - which triggers a series of events that they could not have possibly predicted.

It's at this point that, in Toronto, Canada, a new section of town has been built. Mike decided to use this place as a recruiting point and as a HQ for the Disinfector operations. Thus, half of it is now owned by 001.

You play as a character who has lost both parents as a child, and lived in an orphanage all your life - now one person has decided to take you in - Penelope Owen, a single mother with two adorable twins that kinda need taking care of. Now there are two catches - the first is that you have to take care of her two kids. The second one, is that you have to live in this new section of Toronto - where 001 supports basically everything. You've been enrolled at a school in this sector (also supported by 001) and by some wild chance, received notice of the Disinfector Project's recruitment. It was rather innocent, saying that the big company that owns half the sector - 001 - needed some help from anyone of any age above 15. Naturally, you check it out, only to find that this 'job' was actually to exterminate viruses through rather violent means. Sounds fun.


Features:

Disinfector 001 will have the following:

- Every 001 forum member that hasn't escaped my notice (that is active) as a character
- A Social Link system based on 22 (or more) different Personality Archetypes
- A turn based (or at least, unique) battle system
- Virtually 100% custom graphics and music
- Possibly a crapton more. Possibly.

The game is currently still in development. I have no screenies, as I'm going to plan the whole thing ahead and then start working on it so that I don't have to scrap ideas halfway through.

Current Party Members (taken off the previous list):

- The Protagonist (well, duh) [default name: Rhys Owen]
- 2cool4me4 as Lewis Cooper - Archetype 16
- Predator King as... Predator King - Archetype 17
- Ixayou as Lisa Sørum - Archetype 15
- Inxth as Tyrell Frost - Archetype 12
- Peppy2006 as Kyle Pernsteiner - Archetype 14
- Wonderland as Nate Black - Archetype 7
- Adam as Adam - Archetype 13
- Samulis as Samulis Q. Augustus - Archetype 19

Party's full ._. Party = Archetype 21 btw, if that wasn't already obvious.

A glimpse of the 22 Archetypes system used to define 'social links':

1. The Ruler: Represents authority, power.
2. The Mother: Represented by a mother figure. Protective, caring.
3. The Child: Represents those who seek salvation.
4. The Sage: Represents those who guide, those who act as mentors.
5. The Guardian: Represents a protector, a defender.
6. The Maiden: Represents innocence, purity, etc.
7. The Joker: Represents confidence, humour and spontanity.
8. The Devil: Represents Temptation.
9. The Judge: Represents those who have a strong sense of justice.
10. The Student: Naive; represents inexperience.
11. The Teacher: Represents the experienced.
12. The Dreamer: Represents hope, dreams.
13. The Realist: Represents realism, seriousness.
14. The Endurer: Represents physical and emotional strength.
15. The Artisan: Represents those that are creative, unique, innovative, etc.
16. The Silent: Represents those who tend to keep quiet, but still are very insightful.
17. The Anonymous: Represents those who remain anonymous.
18. Duality: Represents two sides to a personality.
19. Time: Represents those who values the past as much as, if not more than, the present. Also represents potential.
20. Rebirth: Represents change.
21. Unity: The power of many.
22. Harmony: Unity in its purest form.


Battle System
What I had in mind for this is to maybe let the player run around a bit in battle (like in FF games) and allow them to manually dodge enemy attacks. In addition to the four parameter gauges (HP, SP, AP and Release Build-Up), each character will be given an 'action' gauge - when this is full, an action can be executed (attack, use skill, use item, etc), causing the action gauge to return to zero. The closer the player is to the opponent, the faster the gauge rises. Successfully dodging any attack at the last minute will immediately fill up your action gauge. Release attacks are unaffected by the gauge - they can be executed at any time, making them good for executing combos.

I'll also make skills retain a slight real-time element by having the player execute a series of button mashes- er... timed keypresses that affect how strong the skill is.

The HUD will be extremely painful to make T_T

I'm going to upload concepts for the remaining party members, then maybe work on some sprites if time allows. And then I'll see about some maps and stuff. Once I have this battle system all figured out, I'll release a demo xD


It took me a while, but we now have Peppy :D all the remaining characters to draw are Nate Black (Wonderland), Adam and Predator King (Dunno what he wants his name to be, I'll take some random name, or make it so that he's not known by anything but this alias.)

Will work on the scripting soon.

I'm putting in as many active members as possible as NPCs.

Talking of NPCs, there WILL be NPCs in the D-001 team, some that you can make social links with, and they aren't necessarily forum members, so... yeah, keep that in mind.

NOTE: For those of you who did make a request to be a party member, expect a PM from me concerning your character's background.


EDIT: The Protagonist now has a default name. And yeah, I changed the surname.

Here's one of the NPCs that you'll be seeing working with you inside the D-001 team :O

Hint: You'll be able to establish a Social Link with him, so... yeah, watch out for 'im.


EDIT: If you haven't noticed, I completely switched around the colours of the D-001 team's 'uniform'. Here's the Protagonist in said uniform:

Nice. :D I like all these concepts. XD It's interesting to see them, and the progress being made on just character development alone. Seems like a good sign to me there's lots of thought and effort and time being put into this game. That alone is making me want to play it as soon as it's done.

I've just finished... two of the nine (excluding protagonist) party members' background, role, etc. When I'm done with some of the other ones, I'll upload pictures so you won't get bored xD

I have still yet to come up with special abilities for Wonderland and Predator King T.T

Removed 'Freedom' from the archetypes. Replaced with 'Harmony'.

I actually thought up of something pretty similar for your 'release' ability (abilities that are really powerful and can be used when certain conditions are met), except it's a lot stronger than that xD I'm still at a loss at making something you can do that none of the other characters can, but I'm sure it'll come to me.

JPEG stuffed up my sprites T.T I'll have to start again for the protagonist's sprites :/ hopefully it won't take too long, though, and I'll have the first of his front, back, combat and casting frames done (though they'll just be draft copies)

Well, that's Ixa's stuff done. Now, to coming up with abilities for the Wonderland and Pred.

Wonderland, you have anything in mind? It should be able to encompass an entire skillset and everything. If you don't have anything in mind, I'll pull an idea off the top of my head.

And guess what Disinfectors are derived from? :P Mythical beings :P
Scathach = the protagonist's initial Disinfector :)

Going to finish off the last three concepts, send out the last two info sheets to Samulis and Adam, and finishing off that draft sprite for the protagonist. He should be... somewhat recognisable in sprite form :P I'll definitely upload it when I'm done.

Oh. That's the investigation branch for the Disinfection team. They're meant to take care of 'Dreamsphere incidents' (when virii/nightmares leave the Dreamsphere and wreak havoc on earth) and also get to the bottom of why the other world is making warped realities that's hostile to anything that comes within its reach.

Basically, it's the party you'll be working with throughout the course of the game.

How large a part do I play as a party member? Am I in the party the whole time, or just for a bit or what?

Now I wanted to ask you guys... whether you wanted a mix between real-time and turn based battle systems or play the game in full turn based experience?

Pros to the first option:
- A 'new' feel
- Will certainly play differently from other games
- Will give new players a small challenge

Cons to the first option:
- Learning curve may be steep
- Gameplay may be buggy
- Might not achieve the effect that I wanted

Pros to the second option:
- Stable gameplay
- A 'nostalgic/retro-ish' feel
- Will be something you're used to

Cons to the second option:
- Might get a teensy bit repetitive
- Nothing new there
- No uniqueness, which is something I want the game to have aplenty

So like, your choices please.

What I had in mind for the first option is to maybe let the player run around a bit in battle (like in FF games) and allow them to manually dodge enemy attacks. In addition to the four parameter gauges (HP, SP, AP and Release Build-Up), each character will be given an 'action' gauge - when this is full, an action can be executed (attack, use skill, use item, etc), causing the action gauge to return to zero. The closer the player is to the opponent, the faster the gauge rises. Successfully dodging any attack at the last minute will immediately fill up your action gauge. Release attacks are unaffected by the gauge - they can be executed at any time, making them good for executing combos.

I'll also make skills retain a slight real-time element by having the player execute a series of button mashes- er... timed keypresses that affect how strong the skill is.

Oh gosh... I'm so sorry, I got so caught up in my personal crises I forgot all about this project D:

I'll work on it as soon as I can fix my computer and uh... solve some family related problems at home (which might be soon, might be in a month or so... depends on how douchebaggy my parents decide to be.) Expect some scripting/HUD work/sprites. I've been putting this project off for way too long.
