Shmalloween v.4 (2010)

DOWNLOAD and PLAY HERE: http://www.engine001.com/games/Shmalloween_1240.htm

Shmalloween:
I'm proud to say this is my very first 100% custom game. 0 premade resources were used.
Shmallow is a man made of marsh mellows. He loves to eat marsh mellows and gather them from among the trees in the haunted woodzas. The woodzas are full of all kinds of spooks. Shmallow must journey through the forest and defeat said spooks by pounding his fist-o-fury into the ground and by using his shield of epic marsh-mellowness to repel the evil doers.

Description:
This is a simple but fun game. Very easy, you collect marsh mellows to fill your quota whilst pounding the daylights out of the halloween characters that try to get in your way (keyword there is "try"). I might add touches of a story to this, but it won't be too elaborate.

Gameplay (4 easy buttons):
- Explore (interact with the enviroment/ talk to npcs)
- basic attack (damage only)
- Shield attack (reflects projectiles and damages enemies slightly)
- Dodge attack (Avoid being hit while dealing damage)
(Also you use the arrow keys to move around).

Looks incredibly nifty. ;) The ghost could use a little work though, such as an equal outline.

Thanks Mr. Chapman. It's sailing fairly smoothly so far. If things keep working as they have been I should definately be done before the deadline for the contest.

All the resources are completed except for the final boss. I just don't know what to make it. :?

Hmmm ... I don't think I use those, but thanks for he ideas. They gave birth to more ideas. :)

I just added a third kind of attack that also doubles as a dodge move. So gameplay consists of 4 actions:
- Explore (interact with the enviroment/ talk to npcs)
- basic attack (damage and that's it)
- Shield attack (reflects projectiles and damages enemies slightly)
- Dodge attack (Avoid being hit while dealing damage)

For the dodge attack, would that mean I'll be rolling and continue whammming them as a ball? 8) Or block, and lightning deflect from my arm, so they recieve pain. Or, or, I throw a candy on ground, and the enemies stay stuck in that location or blow up? :D

Sort of. The dodge attack makes Shmallow spin around where he was standing really fast. The barrier of epicness repels enemies. It looks like this:

serrafina wrote:Or, or, I throw a candy on ground, and the enemies stay stuck in that location or blow up? :D

 I like that one.

I'm about half way done with this. I decided from the beginning that there would be no weapons in this game (Shmallow is the weapon) :D But there may be items that you can collect to increase your attack power. Not sure what to make those yet.

Not sure of the context, but that's not a bad idea either. Maybe sweetener or something.

Just finished another new enemy, but I won't post what it looks like because it's sort of a suprise in the story. Also I have an antagonist whitch made, but she doesn't have a name yet. Any ideas?

I thought of that, but then the game could take on racist undertones since the main character is white. There is an NPC named cocoa already as well. It doesn't necissarily need to be a food item.

Why not use pumpkins? They stand out alot. And they can be hidden or seen, with a face or nonface oranges.

And use the marshmallows as experience points or money [like a trade for kids].

Pumpkins (jack-o-lanterns really) are some of the bad guys. And marsh mellows are what you gather to fill your quota and level up. There are like the coins in mario except you don't need 100 of them and you don't gain an extra life. Instead you start with a low quota (10 marsh melows) and every time you fill your quota you gain a level and then the quota goes up by 5. So every time you level up it is a bit harder to reach the next level because you have to collect 5 more marshmellows than before.

Right now the final boss is just the witch character. I'm debating replacing them with something bigger.

LANDMARK! I've hit map 14 out of 20. Only four more to go and then I'll move on to fine tuning and testing (if I have time).

 My math is terrible. Yeah it was six. I actually ended up making 26 maps if you count the tutorial and intro map. Now all the maps are done and I'm doing some stuff with the final boss battle and testing everything.

The game is very nice. I especially like the sound-effects and music.
Found one bug: if you're stunned by the ball creature while leaving a map, you'll be forever stunned when you get to the next map.
Also, is there a way to save? The main menu has a loading option, but I never saw a place that I could save.
If you haven't tried out yet, check out my full game Voyage for Vengeance.
If you did but you're stuck, don't worry, there's a walkthrough available!

For those about to rock, we salute you.

You could make the character invincible (collisionless) when he enters a map-change zone, that way he wouldn't be stunned.

The sound effects and music were good as Miroki said.
I also liked the dialect (if that's the right word to use) of the marshmellow people ;)

I enjoyed playing this game very much.

Loved the sound effects and music, as others have pointed out. The custom resources were also good as well as all the animations and effects. Overall the game was great. I've judged it for the Halloween Competition and I think you've got a real shot at winning that trophy! ;)

Thanks for taking the time to do that. I haven't even seen any of the other entries up yet so it's hard to say.

Deaths: 3
Quota: 55
Defeated Enemies: 102

I died fewer times, but this was my second time playing it. :) Really awesome execution of a really good idea. Very good game overall I must say and I love the graphics ;) ;) (jk). Maybe you could somehow make an equation that figures a final score at the end. Something like Number of enemies killed + quota - deaths.
Who should I really listen to?

Ok you all need to play it again. :D I added meto's suggestion for scoring at the end and made a few small tweaks to the cinematic scenes. Has anyone run into the bonus zone yet? (It's in version 1-4) Don't ask me where it is becasue I won't tell you. :P

I got the bonus zone. But I stupidly ran into the exit point before getting a bunch of other marshmellows :(.

I was mostly re-playing the game originally to reproduce a strange crash that miroki123 and Fireleaf get randomly. I couldn't reproduce it once :(.

But, this game really makes me want to implement the achievement and highscore system.

Yeah it happens randomly. Not very often so you'd probably have to play it 10 times to encounter it. I tested the game over twenty times and it only happened on three occasions.

 nobody likes the ball creatures, but that's why they're there. If you haven't played it to the end I suggest you do. The boss battle is one of the funnest parts in my opinion.

Hint: Rather than trying to use your shield to reflect the ball creature's firepower just dodge. Only resort to your shiled when you really have to.

Therein lies your problem. ;) The spin dodge also functions as a way to temporarily avoid being hit (and it also looks somewhat cool).

I really feel like an idiot here... I couldn't get past the floating orbs in the 4th(?) map. What am I missing here? I couldn't find any keys to unlock the gates and there's no where else for me to go. I've checked everywhere but I can't find anything on any map to move me along...

I had that problem for a bit, you have to attack the switch panel things. The one for that maps door is a couple maps back.

What's everyone think of my idea? He should make a sequel and call it something like Shmallow: and the Horrors of Shmallowmas(-Christmas)... :D

p.s. That's not a very good sequel name I just made it up on the spot.

That's a cool idea. There is a "sequal" in progress, but it's not really tied to a particular holiday or season. If you seach "Shmallow World" in the 001 search bar you can see some bits of the developement.

No you can't defeat the orbs, you can just dissuade them temporarily with your epic shield. I'm glad you like the game. If you like this one, you'll probably like the sequel as well.
