Atommo: Roadkill Cafe

Postby Mike » Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:07 am

Last month, while I was working on 3D for the subscription beta, I was also working with some friends of mine on a game company, named Atommo. My main priority remains to be 001, hence why 3D moved forward and how this coming beta for subscribers will too. This company is a fun-side thing to see what would happen. My hope is that revenue gained from this side project can then be funneled back into 001, seriously.

This game was not made with 001. Plans for 001 being on handheld or console are completely non-existent. My stance remains that many people will ask for it, but the amount of work involved for the very little return (due to the complexity of porting something like 001) is completely unreasonable, at least, for now with how much free time and money I have.

Please, try to spread the word, buy it if you can, tell your friends about, and hopefully you yourself enjoy it, if you know or have your own iPhone or iPod Touch.

Roadkill Cafe

It's the Grand Opening of the Roadkill Cafe and Slim LaChance is out to build a reputation for serving the best redneck cuisine in three counties. Collect roadkills, dodge traffic, and keep your customers satisfied before they blow their tops.

Roadkill Cafe includes the following mini-games:

Survivor - The next time someone tells you to go play in traffic, you'll have the option of trying this simulator first. Dodge traffic for as long as you can.

Vengeance - Why did the chicken cross the road? Vengeance! Bloodthirsty chickens with a taste for rednecks are on the loose. Luckily rhinos hate chickens. Try not to get killed in the melee.

Rampage - What's a road trip without roadkills? Go for a ride on the Infinity Highway, dodging traffic and flattening fauna. Rack up the points the farther you go, but try and stay between the lines.

---

Dynamic fingertip controls - Control your character from any point on the screen. Simply release and touch another location to retake control.
Positional sound - Swarms of chickens never sounded so deadly. Traffic sounds good too.

Contains scenes of cartoon violence, use of firearms, and recycling.

Yeah the logo does change the layout, but messes up, I wouldn't say. It spreads the menu making it easier to see and click on. It's just that we're all not used to it.

Nonetheless, it is a very entertaining idea.

But I did suggest an 001-based app a bit ago, used to track your game downloads, access premium content, etc... We may do that, but it'd probably not make a lot of money.

I wanted it to go beside the other ad, it won't fit there... And your suggestion doesn't fit with the main site.

And as I said:

I didn't notice it at first, but I did notice the space between the links at the top. Then I thought it was an ad, but it didn't change.

Anyways, I'll probably advertise this a little bit to my classmates to get this game, see if it interests them. I don't have an Ipod Gauche or an Iphone. It looks like a lot of fun.

I am pretty sure that ipod/iphone development is done in Objective C. You also need the Apple SDK (software development kit) to publish apps on the app store. Its 100$ and runs only on mac :(

I'm gettin and itunes card today I think I may buy this :D

EDIT: I got it! Havn't had much time to play it yet cuz I updated software too so that took a while. I'll give a reveiw so far though GREAT! :D

Regrettably, I don't (although I'm not adamant in requesting a PC version).

Ok here is my official reveiw

Roadkill cafe is hilarious and very fun although not as ye catching as some games the graphics are simple and very impresive and the gameplay is unlike anything I've ever seen. But I'm getting ahead of my self.

Overveiw

You play as a hilbilly that is looking to make some money and opens up a café on the side of the road to sell... You guessed it roadkill! This game has a great sence of humor and an amazing soundtrack and gameplay to go with it

graphics

although simple the graphics are very well done and you can tell that a lot of time was put into them. Each level of the story mode has a differnt setting not to mention all the animals, customers ect. The thing that makes the graphics so good is the attention to detail. I love how the wheelberal fills up with dead piles of animals or the rocks in the ground or the totally differnt animals each distinctivly differn from the others. They may be simple but the graphics are impresive.

Sound

A great hillbilly soundtrack and some gut splattering sounds add a nice feel to the game

user frendlyness

although a D-pad or virtual anolog stick would be a nice addition to the games control s the controls areno bad. However occasionly I will miss a car coming becuase my fingers in the way. The menu's are very simple but functional no problems there

fun!

This game is blast! It's hallarious to watch your character get hit by a car or reading the funny things that come up on screen in between levels. Also no loading! The game itself is great too. The story mode is really cool and should keeled you entertained for a while but the impressive thin is all the game modes avalible! Run away from insane chickens and play your favorite story levels infinatly in arcade mode. Tired of collecting dead meat? Hop in the drivers seat and make your own road kill! Roadkill cafe offers a nice "story" as well. Collect the road kill and take it back to the café before your customers get mad and leve
oh and don't get hit by a car or rhino or bar while your at it. The locations get bigger with more lanes of traffic and more road kill!

Verdict

A must have for 1.99 it's gameplay is 1 of a kind and the multipul game modes will keep you entertained for hours. Get it while it's on sale for .99 cents!!! Overall I give roadkill café a 5/5

Holy Poop!! This game is the funnest thing I got on my Ipoke!

If I would add something though is and like some king of message or something that lets you know when your wheelbarrow is full.

the controls are easy so no arguments there

overall I give this a 9.5. BEAST! :D

New version is being sent to Apple shortly to add a pause button, make the lives/scores orient based on iphone orientation, and fix a few things.

Oh! I think it would be cool if there were upgrades. like "Animal lures" so that more animals would come at 1 time or, "Friendly Service" so you would get 5 stars more easily. I think that would make it even more fun!

I saw someone wearing a shirt that said "Roadkill Cafe" in my Human Resources class (Possibly the worst High School class I've ever taken, but, it's required) yesterday. It kinda psyched me out. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with Mike's Roadkill Cafe, but it was pretty funny because it even had a whole menu of different Roadkill on the back.

Not that it's a bad thing, but roadkill diners are increasingly popular anyway. The way it's portayed here is questionable, but hilarious.

I think Atommo needs to make a street rage kind of game where you can run people over for humor

Run from cops... Cause high speed crashes... that kinda thing. But anyways...

4/5 - Very positive review. Said that all it needed was a few minor tweaks to maximize the fun.

But a 4/5 isn't bad. Love the graphics, love the gameplay mechanisms, just somehow the replay value fades a bit over time.

We're still making sales from this game, even to this day - it's quite surprising.

We kinda gave up on iPhone games after the sales "seemed" low - but we even have some weeks where we sell hundreds, and it hasn't really died down. We also had some technical difficulties with our crappy Mac - I hate Macs :(.

Anyway, the Mac is fixed now, and I have a bit more time than usual, so we are looking at doing a small sequel to this game, and a new game altogether shortly.

iPhone development is tricky. Theres a lot of factors to take into a count when coding on the Mac, or coding for Mac on a Windows which is nearly impossible. ;)

Lots of things came up. But yeah, as of a few days ago, we started a few projects. Just a side thing still.

We're doing a small sequel to this game, and a new game, and releasing them at the same time.

001 and Atommo have nothing to do with each other, other than the fact that I'm the main programmer on both ;). They use two different engines, and there are currently no expected plans of having 001 work on other devices beyond PC, just the possibility if this project makes enough money.

We didn't make enough money to make up costs to pay for an artist for the next game. Then two of our teammates disbanded.

The two remaining, myself and my roommate, are likely going to focus on non-games, after we release a quick second version to this game.

Yeah, we had a huge list of really interesting game ideas. I can't say anything for the game ideas written by the one who did leave, but I can say that some of the ideas I came up with will likely be 001 games once it nears completion, or at least commercial use.

The engine is purely designed to be extremely small, portable, fast and "hacky". So putting together games if you're a master at C++ is a breeze. Adapting an editor for it would be close to impossible and not really worth it when 001 is pretty developed anyway.

Finally bought the full version of this today. It's one of my favorite apps. Nice work :)

Wait until you play our next game, which is taking a year for no reason *grumbles*.

Just bought it, LOVE IT!
All I can say is that it's all like equalized, with all the modes.
If you just want it fast, rampage.
Arcade, Cafe (and arcade)
Strategy, vengeance.
I found Now3r3's (I believe) and Stephen's.
So, great job on it.

Thanks. I wish we had more time for games - we had about 30 amazing ideas, and just not the resources to pull it off. Maybe if 001 ever grows big enough and works on iPhone, it'll be easier to pull off (and pay for artists). Ack.

I hope we don't need to jailbreak the iPhone to get the games or the game maker running on this device. But I guess as soon as 001 is that big apple might has invented something newer and better that might replace the iPhone (whatever that might be).

Ahhh, palm. Rest in peace. HP will kill that company.
Once you have mastered the :usevalue:, you are a truly awesome 001er.
