Mine is almost the worst ever. High Ping, slow Download, and slow Upload. The only thing I like is that my internet connection is constant. There's only one disconnect at 4 AM local time, but that's for maximum 1 minute. So I have internet access for 23 hours and 59 minutes a day:

We are a less than mile outside their coverage zone, so we don't get the full 1mbps.

Ya, your glitched or something. Try pingest.net

Your computer is basically claiming that your packets take 0/1000ths of a second to get to the server.

LOL i probably have the slowest internet here with my awful dial up internet and all. I can't even get speed test to work thats how slow my internet is but I do happen to know my downlad and upload speed by heart so here it is:
500 bytes to 1KB per sec i get 1 if im lucky
1KB-48.3KB per sec upload

I bet no one has a speed slower than 500 bytes per second LOL :-P

Hmm, 1KB per second... that's what I call a "Holzmodem" (wooden modem). But my internet speed is also crappy. That's why I call it "Dorf-DSL" (village DSL), because it's the fastest internet connection you can get in a village like this. That's almost like driving a "Trabbi" (that's a car from the old GDR. It's nearly dies when you drive it at a speed of 100 km/H.) on a Autobahn (that's something like a highway in other countries). It's as slow as a truck, but a truck can transport huge amounts of different things while a Trabbi is just useless since only two persons, maybe even three can sit in it.

The backbone I'm connected to has fiber as well. You probably have fiber to your ISP (which is listed less then 50 miles away). 0 ping is still not right though :P should be 1.

Our internet is still wired as far as I know, and I think the wires are quite rusty today. I hope we will get better internet by the end of this year. And no deeds, it's not auto ban, it's called Autobahn. Recognize the h.

In English, the pronunciation is extremely close to auto ban. Yes, I saw it. It you read the very first line of my post relating to that, you could easily see that I obviously saw an H.

It's pronounced auto bahn in English too, not auto ban.
(Writing pronounciations sucks.)
(And this is getting off-topic.)

It's about 5 by the Ping test.net thing.

Heh, if I had to write it in english how it is pronounced I would say it's pronounced "Out 'O bun" (pronounce bun like "Bunny" without the ny at the end and speak it slowly). But yep, this is almost off topic yet. Oh wait, it is.

Oh my ... It would take at least 10 years until I could say we have fiber optic lines here. And as soon as we have them there will be way better technology available for bigger cities and all our neighbour villages but not for us. I really hope Germany's smaller towns and villages will get the better internet technology our German ISPs promised as soon as possible. But I guess in 2014 we still have our Dorf-DSL.

Hehe, the only advantage of my internet connection: it's almost up for 365 days a year. Maybe there's one day the internet doesn't work for one or two hours, but if that day comes, it happens at night when I'm already sleeping.

Erm, mine never ever, ever goes down. Unless of course someone hit a cable underground...(I'm looking at you Hydro One)
Of course, that's very unlikely on a dead end street with 2 houses.

I had multiple 15 and 8 Mb/s downloads multiple times, but it cleared up

Looks like cox fixed my lines recently, not getting 60% packet loss anymore.

i guess packet loss is different on cable than it is on wireless. my results are the same no matter what server i connect to the only difference is ping times, and my ping isn't that good to begin with lol :-P

Ping is just the time it takes for a packet to travel from one location to the next. Packet loss is how many packets die in that trip.

Despite the usual belief, you're only wireless for about 100 feet :P When you hit the wireless router, your packets turn physical.

Where I live, that would be Cox.

caps on cable are pretty rediciouls considering that it costs them next to nothing to provide bandwidth. caps on wireless can be a complete rip off too 5GB a month is way too small and that's what i would have gotten if i went straight through Verison. i went with a reseller instead that used the Verison towers and offered me 20GB a month for 20$ less and no contract. which isn't that bad considering my connection speed. if i could get decent sprint coverage i could have no cap at all.

@deeds my connection goes through cell towers. and it connects to a tower about 4 Mi away from my house so its definitively more than 100ft then that goes to another tower and another tower, and so on and so forth til it reaches the main server 300 Mi from where i am and that goes to the internet and then it does the whole thing again back to my usb modem on my pc. :-P my modem is hooked up to a high powered amplifier thats hooked up to a high powered antenna that broadcasts my signal to the tower. :-P the equipment was crazy expensive but worth it. considering the other option being satalite which has rediciouls rolling caps, speeds that are usualy as bad as dial up, even more expensive equipment and non existent customer service

That's not wi-fi then. That's a cellular data protocol. W

there are long distance wifi sevices called WISPS that target rural areas. unfortunately there isn't any WISPS in my area so i have to use cell towers

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1758668864.png this is my speed test at the nearest sever to me.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1758674646.png and this is the server over 2000 Mi from me and the speeds are very simalar except for ping

its hard to tell with my connection since it fluctuates like crazy at one point i might have 1.4 Mb and then at another its only 600Kb :-P

Yeah, that packet travel time is the bulk of your issue. If you are being send a lot of packets at once (good bandwidth), overall speed stays pretty good.

my speeds are also greatly affected my signal strength to the nearest towers and its connection to the relay towers as well as tower congestion server congestion which are all problems cause by having to share my connection with smartphones and other 3G enabled devices. but instead version had to use tower to tower transmitting due to the fact of how much it would have cost to run a T1 line all the way from town which is 20 Mi away to my nearest tower. as long as i have my connection to 3G its never as bad as dial up was but sometimes my connection to 3G goes down for hours at a time and i have to connect to verisons voice tower which is almost as slow as dial up :-?

Made the speedtest again after some time. Nothing really changed. We should have better internet lines since october or november last year, but it seems as the lines became a little bit worse since "Deutsche Telekom AG" didn't do anything with our lines.

Image

Also note: Slower than 89% or Germany. THAT sucks.

Hmm, Servers in Berlin are a little bit better than those from Cologne and Dusseldorf (but still slow)

Bah in my current day and the 20 years following... I guess our ISP will not start replacing that crappy ADSL connection until it's completely dead. But even then they will refuse to renew that here, because we still have telephone, so we can use the ancient dial up networking connection again. Seriously, when that day has come and this happens, we sure build our lines on our own to our neigbourgh village to finally get a faster internet connection, that's for sure  Just kidding. But anyway, the system of distributing internet connection speed of german internet service providers totally sucks. Villages with about 2000 inhabitants (like mine) get 2 Mbit downstream and 0.2 Mbit upstream while some of our neighbour villages with an equal number of inhabitants (maybe some more or less) get internet connection eight times as fast as ours. To be honest, I'm glad to live where I live now. Else I would have even slower internet.

German ISPs are terrible. Try to get fast internet in Germany and you'll have to face this: The ISP will send a mail to you saying next weekend there will come a technician to you and setup everything properly for you. This technician will not come but will pretend having been there. Result: You get angry because the technician wasn't there but you pay him. Then the technical support will also pretend the technician was there. Bad thing that you mostly can't prove he's not been there. Most people who have been waiting over 6 weeks (!) for their Internet connection to be set up contacted the technical support of German computer magazines since that's sometimes the only way to get the internet connection set up properly.

To make this short: Be happy when you HAVE internet, no matter if fast or slow. Just be happy when you have it.

I used to have a crappy 1mb internet, now I have this:

Not much but, damn. It's waaay faster.

For some reason, it shows as 9mb connection but when i'm downloading shit i get 1mb/s speed. I guess it's the server I tested on that is a bit slow maybe.

Do it again. Also, if the server where you download the file from has a lower bandwidth or limits the download speed, you will only get 1MB per second. Try downloading something from another site, for example a disk image of a Linux distro, such as Ubuntu. Those files are hosted on servers with a high bandwidth connection. They're like 700 - 800 MB. See if you can download at a speed of 9MB/s there.

No no, It's a 10mb/s connections, I download things at 1024 kilobytes per second, which is expected.

Let's test it again after some time has passed:

Image

Horrible, still. Our ISP has 3 and a half stars, but why the f*** are we still slower than 89% of Germany? To be honest, we could have the choice: Use a DSL Connection and get this slow internet with the only advantage that this connection is stable (doesn't reconnect at daytime and hasn't any useless disconnects otherwise), or have an LTE connection with the advantage of a highspeed connection of about 2 Megabytes downstream AND upstream but slow-down to dial-up connection speed after about 5 or 10 Gigabytes of traffic. Hehe, in Germany you have the decision: Limited fast internet connection or stable internet connection, but not both combined. Sometimes it's like cars: The faster you can drive the higher the chance of crashing. ;)

And yay, we now got LTE which is a gift of God. Look at this speed in contrast to my previous tests:

Not too bad, more than I would ever need. Would probably be a lot better actually if my router weren't on the other side of the house, or better yet if I didn't use wifi at all.

I decided to take this test when I realized that 001s game download server was ridiculously fast. Downloaded 50+mb in less than 20 seconds. Any reason you use such a fast server Mike?

Well, there's a pretty big gap from the cheap hosting providers (which we had to leave a while ago due to the number of active users and downloads), and the decent hosting providers. There wasn't much of a middle ground I found. That being said, there's plenty of room for us to grow as well.

Re: Internet speed

Postby K-Pone » Thu Jan 03, 2013 8:58 am

Is there anyone else using LTE?

This is why I love LTE:
We got Image before and now we get Image ...

And this is why I hate it:
... and when we reached 15 GB of traffic we only get Image until the 12th of each month.

I feel like Germans become fooled by the ISPs. Where we live we get 2 MBit lines using DSL and 21.6 MBit using LTE. Sounds good so far, BUT when you use LTE you only have a certain data volume available until your LTE Speed becomes limited. For me this is just a drop in the ocean. Villages like mine will not get faster DSL lines until the year 2038, so we get LTE that we have at least a little bit of fast internet. This may sound great for most people here, but actually those who need fast internet speed become disappointed when the speed becomes slowed down. Unfortunately there's no option to turn this off.

When you hear this you might think that's poor what Germans get. But what's really poor is that big Cities like Berlin, Hanover, Hamburg, Munich and such have DSL lines available with a download speed of 5 MByte per second and even faster (I bet 5 MByte per second is the minimum they can get). And what do the ISPs do there? They even upgrade the lines to faster ones. You can get up to 50 MByte per second in big cities here. THAT is poor. We have the same DSL lines for over 7 years now while big cities get faster lines about every second to third year. I hate german ISPs. Each of them.

Anyhow, I'm currently on ADSL with 16mbp/s but I want to (and probably will) switch to VDSL 52mbps or even FTTH/FTTB as soon as I move to a new flat. 100mbps whohooooo.

Sadly, there is a massive discrepancy between Internet connection in rural and city areas here in Germany. In some rural areas you barely get 768kbps over the line or are forced into limited LTE shit for 40€ each while in most cities you get at least 16000 to 52000 for 20€ or in some places even FTTH (Telekom Giganet) with 100mbps for around 60€. Gladly, I live in a city now.

Yep, sadly Germany is very poor at internet speed, as well as in providing support. Here you can get 2 MBit/s, but not everywhere in our village. We get it, but in a house about 300 meters away from our house they get about 500 KBit/s and lower. Sometimes I really hate those people who just want to make money by taking the advantages (at least the advantage for themselves) of these circumstances. We had these crappy lines for about 10 years now, and all the villages around here got upgrades several times over the years, but we didn't. Our neighbour villages are up to 16 times as fast as we are, but we have to use LTE to get "fast" internet. Also LTE is crappy when the weather is bad. Weather good -> Ping: 45ms. Weather bad -> Ping: >350ms and sometimes connection interrupts due to timeouts. So, I think I would prefer a DSL connection with 2 MBit/s and a ping of 56ms and only one crash in 7 years and cancel the LTE crap.

But let's continue in English here ;)

Sure, it's not as bad when compared to something already terrible, but it's still very noticeable.
I would frequently get 4-20 second hangups on my 136 m/s connection. In reality, my average response time was anywhere between 0.800 and 5 seconds, assuming I was the only one using the connection. Very irritating when you're trying to get your MUD on. :P

So, I've been dealing with 28/1 Internet for the longest time (see my previous post of complaints in this thread).

Then I read this post, re-checked for the thousandth time on a few Canadian ISPs for our location... and it seems 150/10 is FINALLY available :D. So I'll be getting that at the end of July. Which will make uploading 001 to the site take 24 seconds instead of 4+ minutes.

Problem is that providers advertise their internet connection plans with speeds "up to 16mbit", without a guaranteed speed. At least here in Germany. I pay for 16mbit too, but usually only get around 12 to 14. Rarely, especially during the night when practilly no one else is on the nearest DSLAM, I even get 18mbit.

Yep, the "up to X mbit" is the cheating of german ISPs. Telling "up to 16mbit, up to 32mbit, up to 50mbit..." from german ISPs actually means "up to 2 mbit when you're lucky". The only way to get fast internet in germany is to live in a big city like Berlin, Hanover, Munich, and such, and being lucky to have the technician there when he/she promised to be there. I bet in less than 10 percent of all cases the technician came on the first day they promised. The only exception is for companies. They will get premium service from every ISP as soon as they need it. I think they can also get 100mbit even if there's only 2mbit available.

Being at the office I have such fast internet as well, but most of the time the upstream is faster than the downstream. High upstream speed is when you have a symmetric connection like SDSL, meaning you have the same speed on both upstream and downstream. That's quite cool, especially when you upload files quite often (like youtubers do).
