Attack-or-Treat (2010 Version ...)

Postby Fireleaf » Sun Oct 12, 2008 6:56 pm

New version coming this 2010 halloween. If you have any 001 human costumes or scary halloween stories (about a paragraph long) that you'd like to share, send them my way and I'll try to include them in the game.

UPDATES for 2010:
- Re-done storyline (All new endings)
- Re-done hud
- Some new animations and sprites for enemies/bosses
- Saving enabled (if all goes well)
- New music
- Lots more ...

UPDATES from 2009:
- More costumes!
- Costume contest!
- More side quests! (10+)
- Some totally new maps! (10+)
- Cheats
- Special Areas and hidden items
- Two new bosses
- More interactive enviroments (things like turning lights on and off)
- Ghost stories to read
- And much much more

Ok. This game I think is going to be pretty good. I have downloaded/borrowed/made tons of custom resources for it including my own songs. I've also got lots of help from people with scripting stuff (sepcial thanks to miroki, metomuc, and Avacado Thunder). Basically it's a fun Halloween game that starts with you going around your neighborhood doing Halloween stuff. You can buy costumes and interact with trick-or-treaters on the street. You can go to a haunted house, corn maze, or a cemetary too and do stuff there. The game has a story involving lots of adventure. It's so dramatic!
A Halloween party has to do with the start, but from there ... well ... just play it and see.

So here's the story if you really want to know: (SPOILER)
You are a kid who lives in the town of Fredericksville. You go to a halloween party at one of your friend's houses but all of a sudden two of your friends get kidnapped. You suspect that they were taken to the neighborhood haunted house called Vancouver's Mansion which is where a murder occured last halloween. You have to race to find out the mysteries of the mansion and find out who, or what captured your friends. It's one big spooky adventure. (You will find all new endings in the 2010 release).

One thing that I could use more of is costumes. If you have one that's good then put it in the resources section as an armor so I can download it. If it has like a mask and a shirt and pants, just make it one equipment item (Armor) with clothing changes for the rest of it.

Ah. The Halloween spirit of 'not scaring the hell out of anybody but your grandma' and 'yoinking candy from adults while not acting like snobs'.
Interesting, and good idea. :D

Ditto on that.
You got the costumes, and resources... so yeah, you're pretty much done from here.
Are there any... surprises or plot twists you can give as spoilers for the time being?

Did you try making them yourself?
P.S. Edit the walls or floors to make it a little... more home-like, yet different from the original 001 graphics. A little darker color would be nice, too.

I have the same question as gamer dude.

Its a good game, you put a lot of effort into it. Great details and graphics, plenty of things to do. Usage of the camera, custom graphics. I don't see a quite steady storyline, but it still is a good game.

Now that I think about it, I guess it's kinda hard to further the story line from there on. Ok, so here's a walkthrough up to that point.
Read the book that your friend tells you to read. Read the second part of the Vancouver story (story1ii) and then STOP READING.
I think I might re-upload it and change that part so that you know what to do. And if you read the entire book, it doesn't happen so I'll have to change it.

Maybe a few "quest" could be added in to get you some money (Such as help someone egg a house for money, ect.). Or maybe you should be able to sell your candy to some neighborhood kids for a few dollars.

Again, very awesome game. I've just finished it.
Some important notes:
-You should add playing time in the final stats.
-The game crashes if I try to save after killing the fire monster.
-When I went to the cemetery after exploring the mansion, I didn't know I was supposed to get a key (gate key), since I hadn't gone to the wife's room when I was exploring there.

Very nice scripting, resources and story. 9/10 :)

Hmm. interesting game, I've got to say. 8/10, mostly due to bugs and plot holes.
Work on it a bit. Looks real good for a short game for Halloween, though.

Thanks for the comments everybody. This is my first game so I didn't really expect it to be perfect. I'm going to try and work on it some more and maybe release a better version later. Again, if anyone has any costumes that are good that I could use, then I'd be glad to use them.

The ending was kind of abrupt, but it was pretty good for a short game. So the popular guy wins and the geek loses? Ain't that always the way.
I didn't find any bugs in this game except for walk-to scripts when you go trick-or-treating.

I just uploaded the new version (2). Now there are some quests to get money and a shooter game that's really fun to play that you can also win money from.

EDIT: I also changed the boss battle at the end and did some things in the hud so that you can see the boss hp for both boss battles.

superb game! really interesting and well done considering you had little time to make it, the resources, scripting, everything was very explored and has a good balance in the whole game, congratulations :D

Yeah, I know the dog doesn't exactly work, but it's a cool idea right?

Shouldn't this go in the Completed games section?

Define Irony..... The game was put up around the time I joined the forums... But you suck  I put my friend's name in hoping to have him in my party.... But nooooooooooo of course not.... I had to kill him... Bah! :D
Nah! It was really good I enjoyed it. 8/10 Blammo

Thanks for playing it! Looks like you did really well
I have a few ideas for remaking it for this halloween with differing endings depending on your stats or maybe just making a whole new game maybe in a neighboring town with a similar system but slightly different.

I definatly need to at least have someone redo the music. I had alot of people tell me it was too repeatative, but I'm not that good at making music.

music was fine.... In my opinion, It fit the theme.... as far as this years instead of redoing it do a sequel ... that would be awesome. Something like "Attack or Treat II: Legacy of Vancouver" or something like it.

Maybe I could make one where you answer the door and hand out candy instead of trick-or-treating among other things. What do you guys think?

I'd kinda like to see this moved to completed games since it does have an ending.

Yeah! I like the idea but it could get boring.... I know!! Make it like a diner dash type game! you have to buy the candy, pick it up and deliver it before the trick or treaters get mad and leave! the faster they get there candy the more your reputation gose up. if your reputation gets high enough new, bigger decorations appear in your house and out side in the yard, your car is faster so you can get to the store and back faster and you get bigger candy dishes to hold more candy and a better costume! I have a TON of ideas for theis send me a PM

I'd need some help making the timing system, but that sounds pretty cool. I would like to put a new story in too and have it be more than just handing out candy. There will be several places you'll have to go to collect candy that are halloweenish (perhaps some that are familiar). ;)

He probably means the game is too short, or that there's not enough fun elements in.

Mind you, votonulo, this isn't a major game, just a certain collection put together for Hallowe'en. Although I do have to agree with him that maybe the content can be worked on just a wee bit more.

Too true. The hardest part is going to be re-vamping the party map. There's alot of scripts in there. Or should I have the costume contest be somewhere else?

I just got an awesome idea for a really cool part of the game!!!! You'll see more once I've at least got a descent screenshot of it.

I think the party would be the best place to have the costume contest, unless you make another party map somewhere else in the game.

I really liked this game. It was pretty simple, but fun. You might think about changing some things though for the new verison.

1. The bats were pretty hard to kill even with a sword.
2. The fight in the underground area against the fire didn't have much explination.
3. Maybe make some special kinds of candy that do cool stuff.
4. Glad you're making a map (that will help)
5. Special Achievements would be pretty neat, but not necessary.

Let me know if you need stuff for this. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions meto.

1. Changed bat HP (I agree they were a bit too tough for bats)
2. The fire fight is under construction
3. New candy is showing up in the next version
4. Map is almost done
5. I might put in special achievements, right now I'm trying to make a decent quest tracker.

I could use a gargoyle or a gryphen if you have either one.

Since you could use more types of candy, here are some ideas for other companies:

Skizzles- (like skittles only they give you a buzz that increases walking speed temporarily.
Life Saviors- Raise HP considerably.
M & N's- Like M and Ms except N's on half of them.

Excellent idea. Instead of regular eggs, they'll be rotten and cause stink damage (temporarily immobilizing and enemy and causing additional damage while they are immobilized. They won't be sold in the candy stores, but they'll be hidden around in obscure places so look for them. ;)

But you may want to decrease health for picking up rotten eggs or stuff like that. I mean, for example, who would want to reach into a trash can just to pick out some fermenting chicken eggs?

eh? It's gross, but not damaging. For the sake of the system in the game it won't hurt you to pick them up. They only smell when they break on a target.

Just implemented two new bonus boss fights. One will have an effect on the end of the game. The new areas are pretty much finished, now I just need to get to redoing some old stuff like the costume contest. Bleeeeeaaah, this is going to be alot of comparison branches!

Score! Just finished a mini map of the town. It doesn't have a locator to show where you are, but you shouldn't need one since there are only 8 small maps for the whole town.

You'll certainly need more costumes than that at a costume party.

Not really. Everyone present is wearing a costume. The guy dressed as the king is the judge.
The hard part comes with providing a rank depending on what you're wearing.

Try using variables. So if you wear certain outfits that match (using an equipment branch on equipped), add more to that variable. Should help. Then simply randomize the other characters' ones.
Fireleaf wrote:Not really. Everyone present is wearing a costume.

The only one that really looks like a costume guy is the 'king'. Maybe try adding more customs based on the available costumes, e.g. vampire cloak, frankenstein's dumbbell-shaped thing on his head, etc.

I guess I should add cat ears on some of he girls and a superman symbol on the guy wearing the red cape and T-shirt. In that particular screenshot you can't see too well what everyone is wearing because you only see the backs of them.

SCORE! Just finished the costume contest script. It simply ranks you depending on what costume you are wearing. The lowest place you can get is third, so as long as you have a costume of some kind you are at least rewarded with the smallest prize: $10.

So the criteria would be the cost of the costume or some more complex stuff?

The costume judging really depends on how hard it is to get the particular costume. Not all of them are sold in the costume shop, some are hidden around. Of the ones you can buy, the more expensive ones give you a better chance than the cheap ones.

Hiding it may not be such a good idea. Make those costumes harder to obtain; because if one chatterbox spills the best costume's location, the game's costume judge system is done for. Better yet, randomize the costumes' locations and availability.

You may have just repeated what he just said.

I think MIV means that you shouldn't just place the costumes say in an "action key pressed by zone" in a trashcan or something like that. If they are that simple to get then you should hide them in VERY obscure places. Maybe put some of them in a locked room that you have to get a key to to open. Or make a combination that you have to do in order to open a certain box.

Or, if you really think this doesn't compromise gameplay, have someone switch his costume with yours if you can persuade him, or if you can do something for him. Like a mini-quest.
For example, some guy is wearing a very rare frog costume. To get it, you'll need to beat up three bullies near his home etc.

I might do that somewhere for one of the rare ones. Frog costume would be good, I've got another idea though. I currently added a new area which is a huge pumpkin-patch maze. It's the largest single area in the game and you have to be kinda smart to get there. There will be a nice little collection of miniquests you can do there.

Now if only I had a way to replace the look of the menu interfaces. :?

Looks alot better than before. I noticed that the shadow for the person in the window doesn't show up in the grass. Is that intentional?

Yeah, it's supposed to look more ghostly because he had no shadow.

More on construction on the giant maze is occuring. I might have some screens up of it soon. It's a really big map and there's alot that goes on in there so it's taking me awhile.

You've added all those strange ideas for the maze?

Some here and some there. Not really all of them. Speaking of that, I need to draw some new doors.

Doors opening and closing, transportation thingies that move you from one part of the maze to the other, parts where you fight enemies, and parts where you solve puzzles.

The whole maze is a bonus part of the game. It's completely optional so you don't have to do it to finish the game.
update: Here's a sneak peek at the maze construction:

Postby metomunc » Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:01 pm

Oh my GOsh! I just got done playing through. Loved it. So much more detail than before. The new areas were especially good. I never found the pumpkin maze, but I did find the corn maze.

Here's what I really liked:
- Sounds (they were everywhere and they were pretty good)
- Enviroments (The feel of the game as a whole and individual areas was very strong. Keep it up)
- Good combination of customs and pre-sets.
- VERY EXCELLENT easter eggs. (Farmer Mike's and the Gargoyle Land)

Here's what I suggest you add for next year (or whenever you release another version):
- Could be a few more weapons (there were alot, but the more the merrier. :D You could make weapons very accessable)
- Improved music (the new stuff was good and I like the style of all of it, but you may want to re-write/re-compose some of it.)
- Was there an alternate ending? (I got the same ending as before)
Who should I really listen to?

Excellent work. Although the ghost who attacks you and disappears in the mansion is a wee bit fast and overpowered...
Also, your minigame is great, but you need to clear all the enemies in the game whenever you restart.

The ghost in the mansion disappears temporarily if you hit him with the magic wand (It temporarily wards him off). I tried clearing the enemies in the minigame and ended up never getting them back. I'm not sure how to script that so I left it. :?

Still, when he reappears he can chop off half your health in a second. Plus he outruns you with ease, so you'll probably want to tone down his speed at the very least.
Also, how many hitpoints do the bats have, exactly?!

I guess I should make the ghost slower, but he's supposed to be able to clear down your HP really quick. I guess it would be more spooky if he moved really slowly and ghostishly toward you. The bats in the origional version had 100 HP, but I shaved it down to 50. If you have the sword you can take them down in two or three hits.

Yay, nothing better than a brand new version of a great old game that now uses a version of Engine 001 that crashes when it tries to load a save.

Should be fixed by next version.

And it would seem less overpowered too. But great work.

It hasn't been fixed in any of the recent versions, so I don't see why it suddenly would be fixed in the next version.

It was fixed temporarily until the bug resurfaced in 1.6.3 from ves' and Jegar's game. Have some faith in Mike.
Now, back on topic...
Ah, the pumpkin minigame with Merlin was a wee bit easy, IMO. You could make the pumpkin cannon less than 100% accurate to increase the difficulty.

Yeah I didn't do anything to the pumpkin game other than fixing it (it developed a bug between versions) Once I got it working again I left it as is. I guess it could be adjusted to be a bit harder. I made it easy at the beginning because origionally it was the only way to make money other than the three or four missions that were in the first version.

Don't ask it out here. He probably won't give it anyway. Instead, try your luck by sending him a PM (albeit your chances are equally slim).

Found some of them a little too hard to get, though. Or I'm looking in the wrong places. For instance, the soldier.

Most of the costumes were made by other people (see the in-game credits to find out who). Of course some of them are hard to get. What fun would it be if you could simply buy them all?

Cheats are only allowed to people that have beaten the game. PM me if you want some cheats and I'll tell you how to get them.

I'm curious to know if anyone has found the "secret" areas. There are two/three of them.

You can do that in the impact script for the weapon. Just make an effect that says "critical" and play it on the X,Y,and Z position of the target. You usually want to make the Z a bit higher like +64 so it shows up above the character.

Sorry for the late response.
I believe this was back when loading had a bug. The game is short, but sweet so it should be enjoyable if you have about 30 - 45 minutes to spare.

I'm going to try to re-release this one around halloween again. I'll need to run through it and find bugs and stuff first though. The newer versions of 001 always do tricky stuff that require changes sometimes.

Will do. I've started testing it today so watch for me in Bugs and Error reporting. :)

So far I've started making some changes to the story and cleaning up some of the visuals. Namely the hud and the bosses. If I have enough time I might redo some of the maps too.

- Clean up the Hud (finished)
- Make the storyline easier to follow (in progress)
- Change the storyline considerably (in progress)
- Re-make some of the boss battles/sprites (in progress)

This game would be awesome in 100% custom sprites. :D
But good on you for updating it every year.

If I were to read these two statements one after the other ... :D ... nah Meto's probably too busy. :-P
Besides this game features a bunch of costumes from the resources section and from other users. Having all custom sprites would basically mean all custom everything (clothes, pants, masks, hats, ect). I'd have to re-make all the costumes. If someone else wanted to re-make all the stuff and turn this into a team project I'd be glad to work with them, but I haven't got the time myself.

Yeah I definately can't handle that much spriting. I'm behind on my games as it is in that field. If you need any tiles or enviroments I'd be glad to donate some. Also, you might think about redoing/replacing your music. From the stuff you've put into the team project it seems like you've got alot better at composing since when you first made this game.

That's something I was going to do without telling anyone, but I guess the beans are spilt now. :) Might as well add it to the list.
