The Atari 2600 throwback Challenge! Last Day! 7/15

Postby AnvilHouse » Tue Apr 01, 2014 11:03 am

Rules and Regulations are currently being decided, until that time use these as a decent guide to create your game if you would like a headstart.

*There will be a max of 3 game entries per person*

The below link connects you to a perfect soundfx generator for your entry.
Special thanks to dragonnutds for finding this!
http://www.bfxr.net/

Tho official color palette *Thanks to Dunce for the correction*

Tips

Black outlines on art assets will be penalized in points.

All art should be simple, a good guide for this is to stick to a 32x32 (resize to x2 for 800x600 and x4 for 1024x768) or 48x48 blank image and no resize 800x600 and x2 for 1024x768

Scoring Categories for Judging

Judging will break down into a total of 100 points not including bonus points to be obtained through mini challenges. Points received will be an average of each of the judges category scores for the entry. (fractional points are possible .25,.5, etc.)

20 pts for following graphics style of the Atari 2600.
-For each instance of black outlines or graphics deviation 5 points will be deducted from this total.

20 pts for a tested and complete game. ( No bugs or errors! )
-Since this is classified as a beginner contest each bug will only constitute a 5 pt deduction.

20 pts for adding the correct sound effect style.
-This is a flat 20 pts if there is an absence or deviation from the style of sound effects then all pts will be deducted.

40 pts for using the correct color palette.
-For each instance of colors not included in the palette, 10 pts will be deducted from the total

Bonus Point Challenges

5 pts if the controls emulate one of the many Atari 2600 compatible controllers
http://www.atariage.com/controller_list.html?systemid=2600
-To receive the bonus points the correct emulated controller must be listed in your entry post. (Example- joypad uses direction commands and a single button)
-
5 pts for a custom art cover for your game.
-There will be no required style or skill for you to get the bonus points, the main requirement is that the graphic represents your game...If ANY graphics can be found doing an internet search, you will not receive these points.

Bonus points can be received for each entry into the competition!
More to come!
----------------------------------------------

Everything scripting wise should be very basic, unless you want to go overboard, a new user to 001 should be able to create a game with little to no problems if they checked out the wiki with a few of the basic tutorials

- I am also going to have certain bonus categories for judging, all of which would be easy to accomplish

Thanks to coffenicotine for a quick reference for the mspaint for beginners resizing mini-tut

coffeennicotine wrote:I know that there are a good amount of people using MSPaint. This is the place where it will be hardest for people with a limited skill-set when it comes to creating assets using large pixels. I was toying with it and found a couple of ways that were somewhat simple. The easiest (imo) would be to create a large area of color off to the left side, use the selection tool to copy a square area, and paste that square area using it as a building block.

This should get you very "Atari-like" sprites.... I think....

We can make it a thing, albeit with slightly worse prizes (1st prize subscription or something).

I plan on actually throwing a competition of this caliber pretty soon with a bit of a twist, I am thinking on my end the winners will get an exclusive graphics set, the only issue I come up with is getting a decent amount of people to compete in a contest... having just 5 people in a contest isnt really worth putting one on.

Moral of the story is if someone would drum up enough competitors that are dedicated enough to actually make a game instead of saying they would join and doing nothing. Same issue plaguing the adventure game contest.

A lot more people WILL sign up for this I'm sure, seeing as a 3 year old can make atari style graphics and a complete 001 noob could easily come up with gameplay.

Alright I have been persuaded by reaching page number 2 in responses, if 10 people pledge to participate in this contest at minimum...then I will go ahead with setting up some decent guidelines and judging criteria.

PM me to join the petition to start the competition, 1st post has been changed to reflect this.

I'd sign it but I'm such a gross offender with failed deadlines, commitments, and other things related that I dare not.

But, that having been said.....
This is a very good idea for a contest due to it's inclusiveness.
All skill levels should have a very fair shot at winning this.

Also found this I made back in the day.

Guessing the biggest considerations would be color depth limits (either limits to overall palettes or colors on screen at one time) and pixel size.
(To make the contest easier for beginners maybe require a low resolution for the game so complicated resizing of sprites won't be necessary?)

the rules are being edited to reflect the change, I can tell you right now they are very basic

use only a 256 color palette

Black outlines on art assets will be penalized in points

all art should be simple, a good guide for this is to stick to a 32x32 (resize to x2 for 800x600 and x4 for 1024x768) or 48x48 blank image and no resize 800x600 and x2 for 1024x768

Games should look like they are directly ripped from the Atari 2600

Ah got ya now. Yeah i never owned an Atari, i was more an Amiga fan back when i was a kid. Do i have to make an actual Atari game clone or make a game of my own choice so long as i use the Atari art style.

Also when can i start work this game? I presume when we have ten people?

You can make this game at anytime, it just can't be submitted into the contest until a minimum of ten people join.
This will allow for those that join early to have ample time to hammer out a concept, this way everyone could have a decent idea by the time the the actual developement time.

The games should be original.

Well if you think about it, what is stopping a person from actually starting early?

There is no real way to limit a person other than withholding info about the contest or limiting the used assets to a specific unreleased set... using either of those methods could really kill a small competition. Maybe if we could get some people to get into the contest thing I could hold a monthly themed competition... just wish the users that don't post on the forums would also get into it ;)

I tried to do a monthly game jam a while ago. It never actually happened, obviously, though I do still have half a random idea generator laying around. Actually, you could have that if you want it. It works, I just never added a ton of ideas and whatnot to it.

Anyhow, this looks fun. I'm not promising anything for now, but I may put together an entry when I'm bored. If I do, I'll sign up officially!

Is that a definite yes? Either way, if you have played an Atari 2600 game, or have watched play videos, the required scripting to make even a long game outside the arcade genre is very simple.

I hope you decide to come up with an entry or two, would love to see your interpretation on an Atari 2600 game! ;)

Mike wrote:Maybe once things become more stable it might be worthwhile to post about it on Facebook.

Would be awesome for this to take off up to that point
---

On a side note, there will be multiple judges to decide the eventual winner... I am looking for a creative way to judge the games, for example: A side by side judging matchup for games in an elimination format,, multiple rounds with increasingly difficult point standards, etc.

Please post your ideas, the format we use to judge the games will receive a special gift ;)

you are not cloning a atari game, you are making a game that could in theory be played on the console.

From my research seems the Atari resolution is 192x160, the 001 editor will not allow me to go that low :@

hm, i think it might be ok to ignore that part of emulating, engine001 cant scale it a playfield that small would be pushing it.
use larger, blocky sprites to compensate. scaled up pixel art in other words.

Rescale? I guess thats the resize actor event? Sorry for sounding stupid but am wanting to get it right.

I think i figured the 256 color palette, done some research into the actual controls of the Atari and even the Atari specs, i have also come up with a simple idea for a game and quite sweet to and watched quite a few youtube videos. Think am about set to make the game plan now. :D

i am just going to draw my sprites upscaled, not using the scale actor event. though your way will save a few bites of memory.
i already got a game concept going, i hope i can pull it off as it is kindof am Ambitious

hm, according to this, resolution works kindof funny with the system https://atariage.com/forums/topic/169128-what-is-the-atari-2600-screen-resolution/

we might be safe winging the resolution a little.

also, her is a resorece for everyone http://www.bfxr.net/

I know that there are a good amount of people using MSPaint.

I think....

I kinda need a better way to phrase this, but how close to a Atari 2600 game does it need to be? For example, the Atari 2600 could only deal with two sprites or something like that on a screen at a time. Is that a rule? (pls no)

I mean, look at the vid on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man_(Atari_2600)
Google Eclectic Gaming....I dare you. Or Sharpened Steel, you can google that too. Hehehehe.

Absolutely not.

we might be safe winging the resolution a little.

Yeah, granted it would be easy to just set the resolution... it is easier to just resize your sprites. Last night I added a general guideline to actor sizing in the first post. I figure as long the the sprites have an approximate 1/10 screen resolution (general size mainly, I will not specifically measure out each actor)

Thanks for the awesome link... added it to the first post with a credit ;)

Danny wrote:From my research seems the Atari resolution is 192x160, the 001 editor will not allow me to go that low :@

Yeah just covered this ;)

Thanks coffeennicotine, I wish I could just directly link to this post instead of using the quote to save some space. Anyway very good idea I will add this to the main post along with a general mspaint resize method

I'll hop in on this, though I also have a big problem with dropping games. :?

Any restrictions on what style of games we're aloud to make? Like adventure or puzzle?

Just a bit of advice, if using Paint.NET or GIMP, turn off resampling when resizing your images!

It looks like it'll be a little while before this contest starts, so I'm definitely in. I just need to finish my current project first.

Also if using photoshop, always use nearest neighbor for resizing instead of bicubic linear it retains all of your hard edges ;)

Okay I will start spending the day updating the first post. In this time I would ask for 1 additional person to join since Danny left the competition. If you have any suggestions for a creative way to judge this is your last chance to give your input!

Starting from today all contestants will be granted an additional 2 week planning period, after which there will be a 4 week period to submit your games.

-In that 4 week period there will be some mini events to increase your point total- All of which can be accomplished regardless of skill level*

Good luck to everyone! And stay tuned!

Not at all, for pledging your support early you received all of that extra time to plan and create a game. Keep in mind you can have a max of 3 entries.

When the extra planning period ends I will provide a format in which to submit your games.

I'm going to have to change up the style of my game a bit; 001 doesn't like having 400 actors onscreen at once. Yay for 3 fps! :P

Otherwise, my game's coming along great! :D

I really hope it's not too late for me to drop out of this. I hate to do it but I'm afraid I might have to. Some things came up involving my family and I'll be gone for another week which simply isn't enough time to finish my game. I'm sorry, but working on my game isn't exactly my top priority right now.

My game will be pretty simple, as I am doing most to save time on graphics and scripting. I just want to participate, so it won't be anything big. I'm working on a zombie shooter at the moment. So far I've made a main character with a moveset and some weapons, as well as basic level scripts.

Same really. Been working on the engine more than the maps. Good to actually make content though, it's been a long time.

So I spent all night working on my project. All I have yet to do is draw mazes for the player to traverse, and then perform final playtesting. I am proud of what I have accomplished in the last several hours.

I'm finally back. I'll see if I can finish it in 8 days. It's doubted, but not impossible.

Just working on some really simple physics puzzles for my entry. Trying to take it back to old school games - collect gems, complete the level as fast as possible, save the princesses.

I'm in the middle of moving so I might not make it in time. Had some good graphics and physics going on, it was a shooter as old school as you get it. Just had to create the actual levels. I'll post some screenshots after a while.

Yeah, not sure if I'll get done in time either. Even for a simple game, so much goes into it.

I'mma have to drop out. Been busy this whole time and now I'm about to leave for another trip. Though honestly, when I did have time I just didn't feel like working on it. It's a shame. I do feel like finishing it tho, it's a fun game.

Maybe an extension should be considered since most contestants (and even the judges) haven't been very active, and most of those who have been have said they don't have enough time.

I would have finished it if the timing had been better. Like I said, I'm in the middle of moving to my own appartment across the country and starting a new job. Not a lot of time left over.

I have extended the timeline 2 weeks, if it does come down to it...I can figure something out for each person releasing submissions if we lose any more contestants.

Here I go...

Linky link: http://www.engine001.com/games/I+Am+A+Bit_3152.htm

Name: I Am A Bit

Description:

I Am A Bit. I Am Traveling Through This Data Pipe. I Am Capitalizing All Of My Words.

Can you collect pieces and rack up a huge score before being taken down by viruses? I doubt it.

Play GOTY 1985 and... do a thing.

Controller: Joystick. WASD/Arrows for stick and Enter for Fire.

Putting the finishing touches on it now. It is very rough.

Name: Battery Command

Description: Play as a lone gunner defending against endless enemy ships. Not really endless, it ends at day 31 but there are many.

Controller: WASD/ARROWS for Stick, Spacebar and Enter for Fire

I see you handled I Am A Bit's super challenge mode quite well. I was waiting for you to hit that 1000 point mark.

EDIT: I can also clearly see that I've been outclassed here. :)

Ooh. I could do with a fantasy outdoors type thing, with grass and dirt and stone paths and bushes and trees and stuff. Or pretty much any sort of tilest you'd have in a medieval fantasy rpg. Or a platformer view sorta sci-fi airship robot thing. I dunno, I could use pretty much anything. :P
