The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall

Postby Ovoon » Thu Jul 09, 2009 10:02 pm

just today, to celebrate their 15th anniversary, Bethesda released Daggerfall for free download. Those of you with old computers and slow internet fear not, because its an old file and small program. Most of you will need DOSbox to run it however... but thats a free download too

Is it worth playing? I've only played Morrowind and little bits of Oblivion. Is this one good too?

Yeah dude, it's been freeware for a really long time.

Anyhow, daggerfall is realy expansive. But the graphics are like doom. Still cool though.

no it was freeware today. Arena the first one is what your thinking of, its been freeware for 5 years. Arena was a piece of crap :P and Daggerfall was open world, first person, 3D and had loads of quests and NPCs. The game world was 3x bigger than oblivions I believe...

Arena was a hardcore gameplay game which was much harder in comparism to the rest of the Elder Scrolls. Arena fills the whole continent and sends you off to get 8 pieces of a magical staff, then you fight the last boss.

Ovoon wrote:The game world was 3x bigger than oblivions I believe...

Daggerfall only covers 2 provinces, but is twice the size of Arena. Consider the the majority of all terrain is randomly generated - among millions of other generated things. It inspired me to try my hands on making generated stuff myself - Such as the name generated I invented in 001. :P

It takes 2 weeks of non-stop gameplay to walk the longest straight distance in the whole game. They actually tested that - Amazing.

Using numbers, Morrowind is 0,01% the size of Daggerfall. And Oblivion is 0,0267% of the Daggerfall world. If my math is correct, that means Daggerfall is 3750 times bigger than Oblivion is.

Due to the amount of announcements and popularity, it's hard to download. I suggest you get it from here, it's an exact copy from the Bethesda site.

The instructions for installing it is here.

Before you begin, you also need DOSBox. It's an DOS emulator, which also needed for Arena. You can get that here.

The newest patch for Daggerfall is already inside the package you download, so don't worry about that. That's about everything you need to install it succesfully.

I cannot install this. It fails and says:

"This system does not support fullscreen mode" Wtf

And I don't know how to use that Dos thing you said to download and install, which I did.

Typing what? Mount C C:\DFCD?
If that doesn't work then you don't have it in the C drive.
so then D D:\DFCD (or DAGGER) or whatever drive you have it on.

OOO! I see what you did. Mount C C:\DFInstall\DFCD or DAGGER.
Or just remove it from the sub folder and put it under the C drive.

Okay I think I got that part right, it said: Drive C is mounted as local directory C:\DFCD\

But the next part with the fall z.cfg does not work. help? Trying to hurry here to cause I'm making two other computers in the room lag while my friends are playing WOW, they aren't happy about it. My laptop has the evil ability to do that to people.

Okay this elder scrolls thing sucks, I have to re-install it everytime I want to start it back up, isn't there any other way of starting it up without doing that??

And here is a major problem with dagger, I cannot attack! I have messed with the controls A LOT, and I can't attack. All of the other controls work fine, why is this happening? Lol, I know it's an old game, but I'm pretty sure the attack option is supposed to work, and yes I readied my weapon, I even equipped weapons. Hey bethesda I played your morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout and now I'm even playing a game that looks like something Doom threw up, but I'll manage. rofl Yes I like to bitch, a lot, I have the right since my computer is cursed.

When you want to attack, hold the button down and move the mouse. So if you slash left, move the mouse left. Creative indeed.

From the official tutorial, you need to type the commands(assuming that you replace this path with your own):

Code: Select all
mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000

mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall

c:

cd/dagger

dagger

I love elder scrolls dont get me wrong, anyway I'll try that, didn't know that.

--------------------

Wow! I am done with this game. No offense to anybody but this game is just horrible. I can't even beat this tutorial, the only reason I got as far as I did was because I kept on saving after every single kill. The fighting is just whack and enemies do too much damage and then you die and its over. Eh, whatever. And it's only a tutorial. If anyone else likes it then okay good for you, but I can't deal with these crazy controls and combat system.

I'd like to have oblivion on my computer. But i'm not paying for it, thats crazy, but I'm not using a torrent either, I'm done with torrents.

Actually, it's a massive single player game. It takes two weeks to walk to the farthest location in the game.

Oblivion 5!!!

Damn, I love doing math with Daggerfall.
Code: Select all
Daggerfall is twice the size of Great Britain...Now comparing to 001...

Fact 1: Great Britain's size in Squarekilometres: 225,800
Fact 2: Great Britain's length(assuming GB is a square for now): 629km
Width of GB: 360km

Length of GB in pixels: 2377322834
Doubling the size to resemble to Daggerfall...Dividing by 32 to get in 001 squares... 001 squares: 74291338
Amount of maps with a length of 500 to walk in length: 297165
If one of the maps above is 1 square on a world map in 001 that has the length of 500, then you'd need 594 maps to cover the length

Width of GB in pixels: 1360629921
Doubling the size to resemble to Daggerfall...Dividing by 32 to get in 001 squares... 001 squares: 42519685
Amount of maps with a width of 500 to walk in width: 170078
If one of the maps above is 1 square on a world map in 001 that has the width of 340, then you'd need 594 maps to cover the width

So, RPGking, there you have it. See how many maps in 001 you need to make to make a game the size of Daggerfall. I doubt you. :|

There are no cheats to any of the elder scrolls games - only glitches. And in the first dungeon there are none.

I had enough of this game, I can't get my head around it. Oh but i love going on rampaging i like how you use your weapon in Daggerfall more than Morrowind or Oblivion

Yeah, it's actually too big... But it's good when you get into it :D

Despite bugs, crashes and annoyingly many skills

I finally completed the main quest! Decided to help out the Blades. The last quest was really really epic, have anyone else ever gotten that far?

Farthest I got was to that Desert place. Once I found out the castle was also dungeon, and consistently got my ass kicked, I stopped playing. :P
Though, I focused most of my time doing quests for the Church of Mara, or something like that.

Yeah, all castles are designed as dungeons, the guards just aren't hostile before you trespass. That resets once you get out. One of the most important parts of the main quest involves breaking into Castle Daggerfall's treasure room, which is spectacular on its own. If you can, try following the steps so you can see the room, even if you haven't gotten that far in the main quest.

But yeah, Sentinel's castle is confusing. I had a hard time navigating in the castle and finding the right people. I wouldn't complete Daggerfall without walkthrough, and I didn't complete Arena without hacking it first. :P
