Magic of the Gathering

Postby serrafina » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:43 pm

Don't know how many of you folks know this card game, but it does relate to card structure strategy, where the basic cards in your deck could be wiped in mere minutes to an opponent who specialized his deck to work in a certain way. The Magic of the Gathering is based upon five colored types of creatures, followed by ancients, enchantments, instants, and other traits. There are now field cards that can tide the battle too.

Anyways, my brother and I dueled last night. He won twice, and I won once (mostly due to him being mana screwed-manas are the enegry cards that are used to cast spells or summoning of monsters). It is a pretty cool game. We both had a red and blue deck. My deck's strategy is to fly over my opponents and attack directly upon the player and recieve 1 life to any blue activated cards. The blue cards also are counter types; a good example will be blocking a summoning, returning a monster from the field, and reactiviating and copying older spell cards.

Played it, loved it, got addicted to it, watched my friends blow a bagillion on it, avoided all contact with it.

Yuhioh was so much better :( I had decks built where I could win by dealing 8000 damage in 4-6 turns if I drew the right cards.

Yugioh was awesome, until players began to change the rules for score, points, fusion, etc. They didn't stick to one condition.

That's right, Yu-Gi-Oh's were much better. They ruined it with all these fancy fusion monsters, cards that contradict each other, etc. Now it's just too damn complicated.
Magic of the Gathering is still awesome. I don't duel though, I only collect rare cards.

Green mana doesn't empty or drain from your mana pool and omnath gets +1/+1 for each green mana in your mana pool

The deck i built is a tri color deck of red, green, and black. One thing I learned about magic is that there are always cards with effects that go against the convention of the color. For example a red card that can counter a spell. I went to great lengths to find them and put them in my deck so I was able to create a deck of brute force and manipulation. One time I had a match with a friend using that deck and it was a back an forth match that lasted for 3 Days before there was a winner.

I guess we take turns drawing. We'll first draw our first card to see who goes first. By having a land, you call who goes first. By having a monster, we'll see how has the highest to call. Ready?

F***, I'm dead... :P lol. Good play man. If it wasn't for that card, I might have had the advantage. My next card would have been 'Artisan of Kozilek.' When you cast 'this monster' you may return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. Annihilator 2 (Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifaces two permanents. Also, attack [10/9]. Only in the next turn! XD

Yeah, but you got mana rape too. I don't know how you manage to pull it off, but you did, and that's what counts. lol. I only got by because of the Orochi card. I always got mana from tapping that sucker. But good game, especially an online one! XD

Alrighty, I need to shuffle my deck. I'm curious if there are others who want to play Magic against us.

Just let us know guys, we'll be ready! XD I would love a 2 by 2 Teams. It's better for four players! :D

Well, this one was kind of made for discussion, so I think a new one meant for dueling will make sense. Plus, it doesn't have to be made for just Magic, we can play spades, hearts, etc. Even Uno, but that would be werid. lol.

lol. I mean like what we just did here, we'll have a dueling session. After we're done, somebody can create a new game. This time, it's spades. When we're playing spades, I'll go first, then you, then extra guy 1, and then extra guy 2. We'll jus follow the cycle until the game ends. The only problem with spades is that you can only play with one deck. :p It's useless, but if we're doing a team battle for magic. That's what it'll be like.

Actually, I might make a post where if you want to have a team battle, send me a pm. We'll tell you when it starts, so everybody can get ready. I'll pm the players reminders, so they won't forget the date. Sounds fair?

Hey guys ^^ was wondering whether anyone still plays this (I hope so O.o) 'cos I'm pretty interested in it (yet I still don't quite understand the rules T.T) so I'm looking for someone who wouldn't mind to explain the basics? :L

Oh, and I'm about to go build myself a deck so maybe I can play against you people sometimes :P any pointers for deck building? xD
I'm back, but not in business. Woop woop.

First Deck tips: Try and stick to one colour. Each colour has its own rewards:

Blue - Countering spells
White - Protection and Healing
Green - Lots of mana
Red - Lots of direct damage
Black - Lots of forced creature sacrificing

Also try and keep a good balance of spells and creatures, as well as a good amount of lands.

Yeah, it's the best tip for new beginners. I totally vouch for Tomeh's suggestions. ;)

Heh, you're going to love canceling other's spells, summons, etc. That was my first deck, and I took down some of my opponents by screwing them over when they finally get the 'best monster'. I trump it by canceling the summon. XD Either way, you'll love the feeling.

My first deck was a white deck... now I use a deck with every colour!

Hmmm, does your deck contain colorless cards and artifacts?

A few, it's a token deck, I'm working on getting some stronger cards for it though, because right now it focuses on getting out a lot of guys on the field really quickly.

Yeah, I'd suggest a defense behind tokens. If I were to use trample, etc. I can easily wipe them as much as you send them out. It's just depends on your tactic. Like, I could drain your deck quickly from lands, leaving you renderless from creating tokens.
