RAGE

Postby Deedasmi » Tue Oct 04, 2011 12:17 am

Just released, steam is being really slow with decrypting my pre-load files. Like, I might have downloaded the un-encrpyted ones faster : /

It's not quite as open as I thought it would be, but yes, open world.

Great game so far. I was planning an all-nighter, but my eyes couldn't hold up.

In PC, RAGE has a stage modifier. I wonder how the editor looks on the console.

I haven't played it yet, but it looks beautiful. Apparently the game world is painted with one giant texture, no repeated textures. That has a good and a bad side, the good being how great it looks, the bad being it's one of the most massive games ever released. Massive, disk space wise.

I bought this game for the co-op, thinking it would be like the co-op for Borderlands. It wasn't, so my buddy took his copy back. I kept mine because I like iD games, but I've yet to start this. It's on the list of games to play after school :P

It's not a bad game, I'm just pissed that I paid full price. I "rate" my games on the hours played vs. cost. $1/an hour is meh, $0.50/hour isn't bad, $0.10/hour is nearly perfect.

CS:S is currently at $0.17/hour
M&B (I got on sale) is like $0.09/hour

RAGE: $2.85 an hour. That pissed me off so much. While not my worst game, it's the worst of the ones I don't plan to play again.

As a game, it's not bad, but the launch price/play ratio was terrible.

Same as my friend. I figure I'll borrow it after he finishes.
He finished it the other day, he said that if he ran through it, he could probably finish the main story in about 5 or 6 hours...
Borderlands is way better.

One giant texture to cover everything in the world and texture everything evenly and uniquely would crash your computer, especially with the level of graphic fidelity the game has. The game has been done traditionally like many others, just with more attention to art direction, lighting, and texture work.

Actually, he was right. Id developed a "mega texture" technology

For having high res texture, they aren't all on one sheet.

Virtual texturing

Rage, powered by the id Tech 5 engine, uses a more advanced technique called Virtual Texturing.[2] Textures can measure up to 128000×128000 pixels[3] and are also used for in-game models and sprites, etc. and not just the terrain. The upcoming game Doom 4 will also use these

Not a single sheet, but many, many times bigger than 'normal'

Fact, mega textures have been since idTech 4, that's Doom 3, so 2003/2004. Several modders found traces of mega textures while modding Doom 3. However, this technology was never used by id themselves back then.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MegaTexture

It is featured in Splash Damage's game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and was developed by id Software technical director John Carmack

ID used it in a game released in 2007

Quake Wars was no good anyway. :P And 2007 is kinda late compared to 2004. :P
