Far (Where is it now?)

Postby RPGking » Sun Apr 22, 2012 7:11 pm

Image

Far is an open-world platformer with an emphasis on emotion and interactions with others.

Image

You're alone. The world is vast. What will you do to seek companionship and interaction?

Image

How will you find what you long for?

Far has been on the shelf for awhile...

Image

UPDATES

Image

-Finished a "pseudo lighting engine" to complement the games crisp style. Just some cheap visual tricks.

-Added "mossy tile-set" variants.

-Added Vignetting.

-9/14/12

Image

-Finished "shadows" tile-set and redid shadow layout's on The Forsaken Rock

-Added a Nature tile-set.

-Wall portions deleted to be replaced by lower objects. The front of faces without a solid top, or half faces now have no collision, making it possible to navigate to every solid top or "platform" in the rock formation.

-Added "idle", "jumping", "falling" animations.

Image

-Added "structures" tile-set, which consist of fences, post lanterns, and a bridge.

-Added "tree roots" to the "nature" tileset.

-Tweaked terrain.

-Added more shadows.

PLEASED to announce the games sounds are complete (using a modified version of SFXR called BFXR) and the game also has music by an underground chip-tune artist "Arlen".

What do you fight, what are the mechanics, other NPCs, is there even a story?

Have you considered working with someone, so that you could focus on graphics and story while someone else worked on scripting and gameplay? I feel you'd have a chance at finishing something if you shared the experience with someone.

Well, just being back from an iOS dev team, I think I'll work on this solo. Since I've been gone, I've had the opportunity to work with a multitude of dev teams, and I'm a bit burnt out on that. I usually make my games in an engine other than 001, but the hassle of using a 3D engine to make a 2D game (mapping planes, etc.) was a pain, so I decided to come back to my roots.

For you.

I haven't finished the house that'll perch atop the cliff. However, you can make your way down this cliff unharmed if done right. The light parts where there isn't a grass top, you can fall in front of. It makes navigation through the environment a lot easier. I also fixed issues with grass lining up, and did a simple flower patch.

The grass did sway, but it looked awry due to the grass being 2 pixels high; having a strip of pixels swaying atop a static strip didn't look too nice. The tree top's also occasionally spin around.

Character has an idle animation, a jumping animation, and sounds to accompany these things.

I think I know the game you have inspiration from. If not there's another game out there that I've seen that approximates this one. (in a one-off sense.. Not a literal one.) Either way this strikes me as a great game you're up to RPG. And I know from first hand experience that you come up with great games. You've pitched kick#ss games since I've come here. I REALLY hope you follow through with this one. It has so much potential. Fantastic work as always...

Was pretty busy, and a reformat sealed it for my computer. I've been working on other things hoping to make somewhat of a splash in the indie world.

Here's what I've been working on lately.
(Removed link due to games section rules.)

The lighting looks a bit weird where the blinds are because I didn't change my background.
(Removed link due to games section rules.)

Also been working on my own model repository similar to the one Valve has.
(Removed link due to games section rules.)

(Mike if you need a 3D artist hit me up)

I love Far, and I do want to pick it up soon. :D

Remove links, great, awesome.

Just space the url out in some places like the dots, as long as they are not linking to a game uploaded somewhere else.

It's been like that for a while. People were linking to games not built with this engine, or going off topic/spamming links in general. So links are automatically removed from posts just in this forum.

Anyway, back on topic.

I think that is mostly because it "scatters the traffic" and in a round-about way makes 001 lose funding.

I'd like to see this though. Can you pm the links?
Also I think you should work on Far, if there's any debate between that and another project.

I want to continue work on Far (despite not even downloading the engine yet lol :P) because I really liked the idea. I've had a reformat and lost everything, so, I'll be redoing the graphics, mainly they will remain unchanged, but they'll be neater, and will work more fluidly. I really want to add some moar vegetation and make things look very overgrown. Wish there was a way to make stairs work.

I still work mainly in the other engine I used and will continue to do so. For fun I thought it'd be col to return to the engine I really began with, and build something with the skillset I have now.

Swords & Sworcery was actually a huge inspiration when I first saw superbrothers artwork. Another game I took a lot of inspiration from was Pineapple Smash Crew. I followed the games progress on Polycount, and the pixel art used in that game was also incredible.

Thank you, the shadows need an opacity tweak.
I need to make more shadow parts and tile-sets for more complex shadows, as well as the light pieces themselves, since for this I'm not using 001's built in lighting.

Also planning to visually diversify the area, going to be adding plants in spots, more details on the rocks, a few structures.

I've always had fun playing with 001 in the area of lighting and effects. There's a lot of room to play around with such things in this engine depending on how creative you want to get and how much you understand the way light works in general.

I'm really interested in knowing a little bit more about what you're up to with the effects you're going to be using. Notwithstanding the first paragraph, I've never been a fan of the vanilla lighting system of 001. But for someone who is willing to work outside that box there are a lot of neat things you can do. I understand if you want to keep the particulars of FAR under wraps, but if you can be so inclined I'm sure I'm not the only one who would enjoy hearing what you're up to.

Hope to see Far come along here on the forum.

To anyone here that doesn't know that much about PRGking, Any game he is working on is worth following. I would recommend anyone wanting to see a cool title for 001 out to hound this guy to keep up his work on this title.

Hahaha, thanks Coffee, flattered. :P

It's basically a lower tile-set, on a layer over the top of the wall's layer.
Made the actual shadow parts with Photoshop, as is the same with the vignetting.
Like Coffee, I myself haven't really been a fan of the vanilla lighting system as there's too many artifacts, such as seems and "quad" lighting.
I'll definatley be doing a hell of a lot more with the lighting, including sun shafts, god rays, and I would love to tackle reflections.

My theory or idea is an animated tile that has the same layout of the neighboring tiles, going to use the ripple effects in Photoshop and the exporters to render out a nice reflection animation with the base image.

As FAR as the first level (lol puns) That's the smallest rock, and I've yet to unveil some new assets I'm working on. I want to portray a sense of scale with the environments. But you could care less about rocks. The first level is called The Forsaken Rock, it's a formation of jagged rocks in the middle of the ocean where your dwelling resides. After so many years of isolation, you character starts feeling (I don't want to explain this again, check first page for this stuff) blah blah blah. Your goal for this map is to build a raft to escape and head out to open sea. There's limited resources on the rocks so building a raft will require more guile than you think.

UPDATE

PLEASED to announce the games sound effects are complete, made with a modified version of SFXR dubbed BFXR. The game also has music, created by a relatively unknown chiptune artist "Arlen". :)

Wow! That fits so well with the graphics and setting the mood for the game. Does this guy do collaborations? I always thought it would be fun to make some chiptune stuff, but I don't have the tools for anything other than basic midi composing.

I actually found his music browsing around, this wasn't made specifically for the game but I contacted him and received permission to use a few tracks he had done. If your really into chiptune stuff try out Milky Tracker, it's free and one of the best tools for the job, easy compared to other tools too.

I'd collaborate with you if you wanted, Fireleaf, but I kinda suck. I use Sunvox for stuff myself, although Milky Tracker is excellent.

Now we're getting a bit off topic, though.

This is looking very promising. Can't wait to see what the other areas are.

I think with this next update, I'll show off a new area I've been working on. Complete with NPC's, I'll also upload another song.

Nel mezzo del camin di nostra vita
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura
che la diritta via era smarrita.
Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura
esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte,
che nel pensier rinuova la paura!
    Tant 'e amara che poco è più morte;
ma per trattar del ben ch'i' vi trovai,
dirò del altre cose ch'i' v'ho scorte.

Something about this game has had me really interested since it was posted. Hope to see it worked on some more.

Then & Now

Postby RPGking » Fri Apr 12, 2013 12:29 am

Well, Far has surely evolved from here...to be quite honest after I stopped posting I forgot all about it. A good few weeks ago I'd gotten into a fight with my girlfriend, and right after I remember being very depressed. That somehow reminded me of Far.

This was the work of that night and the weeks to come.

So that's not Engine001 and I'm aware of that. It's not a serious project by any means and more of a comfort project to work on when I am bogged down with my other project.
But, it's not dead by far, but certainly does wander about in a state of constant limbo.

Looks depressingly and minimalistically beautiful. Is that made on Unity?

Are you planning on continuing the engine version? The 3D is cool, but I kind of prefer the 2D.

Probably not. But I won't forget where it started. I don't even think I have the engine project anymore, just the art from it.
