Average size for an Engine001 game?

Postby rulegram » Tue Aug 13, 2013 6:49 pm

Any ideas for what the average size of an Engine001 game is?

Depends on the size of your game, how many tilesets you have how many sprites and so on. My games normally came in at around 10-20MB once uploaded to 001, but some games can become 50MB - 100MB or even larger if people insert music, sound effects and so on.

My current game Darkness is weighing in at 16MB when placed into an exe file but i feel it will be around 40-50MB when i have completed it.

Hope this helps?

The search function should have plenty of these topics. BUT with my game in its "Full" state was projected to be somewhere around 560Mb to about 900Mb. Of course that could be entirely caused by poor resource management.
Due to issues with the game I started a demo that would not exceed 60Mbs so that I could submit it for bug reports. You could check a few games in the downloads area it should display the games size.

Based on some secret stats, games are about 6 MB on average.

That being said, most of the games are rarely complete.

Realistically, I'd just grab some of the decent games on the site and analyze their size (it's written before the download link).

You can go to tools in the editor and click "Optimize Resources" it may save some space but your looking at about 1mb tops and that's normally only used if you have updated 001 with later versions. If you have music or sounds you could try to convert them into small file formats but that would take some time and could possibly cause errors in your scripts until you fix them.

Thanks for your replies. So let's say it's 6MB (maybe make it 12MB for completed projects); if there's a 160GB hard drive on the 001 console, that would come to about 13,000 games which is plenty of space.

Personally i feel you should take in to consideration 001 is growing, 001 games wont always be 12mb or less one day someone WILL make a large 3D game with 3D Models that will possibly be around 1 gig or more in size, im not saying it will happen anytime soon but its certainly something to remember. For example had SBG completed the traveler the game would have been quite big. Think about future games to not just what we currently have. ;)

Fair point. However I say, in order to keep console costs down, 160GB would be grand. If say a game comes to 3GB (doubt it but still) you could have 53 similarly sized games on the console at any one time.

It's all about the amount of tile-sets, music, and other files you have. If you only use the default stuff, it will be a lot smaller in size than if you were to use entirely custom graphics etc.
Google Eclectic Gaming....I dare you. Or Sharpened Steel, you can google that too. Hehehehe.

True that. Plus careful management of resources: if you design a new sprite for every flower or blade of grass, and if you use a thousand MP3s your game would be a LOT bigger than the average size.

I don't think file size of game is going to be an issue anytime soon - just saying :P.

My game is only about 20% complete and rapidly approaching the size of 100MB, but there's a ton of custom art and MP3s.

I reckon some compression of audio i sin order! The custom art's grand though and probably makes the game cool!

Is That Mean Deleting Unused Resources Would Lighten The Game ? :)

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend doing that until the game is finished. Deleting Unused Resources is a finishing step.

This is quite similar to topic so i will post it here, ive noticed depending on the size of the game the setup installer takes a while to pop up to allow you to install the game. If a games like 10MB the installer shows almost right away, but if a games like 100MB or more the setup takes around 10 seconds to pop up, is this possible to fix?
