Sunbreak City

Postby Fireleaf » Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:19 pm

Circa 2070 A.D.
About 10 years ago Sunbreak City was a flourishing metrapolis. Now it is devestated and rusting quickly under torrents of perpetual rain. What was once a grand center for business and trade has become a harsh jungle of ruins lit only by moonlight. And now something dark lurks on the streets below. Was it a war? A natural disaster? If he had been awake he might know, but then again he might not have survived. Now Hoodlum must live on his own atop high sky scrapers, gathering fuel and food; surviving and searching for answers.

Genre
Action/Adventure/Mystery/Survival/Platformer

Gameplay
You use a blast pack to make jumps atop the ruins of skyscrapers in order to explore and find food and fuel.
The blast pack fills it's combustion tank when activated until you initiate a jump; when it uses the fuel to propel you upward. You can also adjust the angle of the jump while the tank is filling. The pack also includes a hover-copter device for gliding left to right. Making a blast-jump and gliding both consume fuel, so you want to be as accurate and intentional as possible, especially when fuel becomes scarce.

You can now explore the great indoors as well.

I don't know about it being "awesome" but I like it. This game has a very ambiant feel to it and composing for it has been fun because the soundtrack is a new style for me. Very slow and ... ambiant.

I cleaned up the hud considerably and got the basic mechanics finished for the most part. There will be some screenshots of that coming soon. Also I finished a couple enemies and they are pretty cool. Originally I was going to make the game have no combat, but now I think it will just have minimal combat. Most of the time you will need to stay defensive, rather than go on the offensive because some enemies will be nearly impossible to kill.

This reminds me of Assassin's Creed...! :o I guess just the thought of buildings and jumping, not the jetpack thingy. I'm loving the custom art and can't wait to hear your music! :D

They both do include jumping on buildings and hooded heroes, but this game is considerably less violent. Jumping takes some time to charge so making a long distance jump requires a little waiting time. You also have the hover-copter device which allows you to glide slowly when you are in the air so you don't have to worry about being 100% accurate with making jumps (but it uses up fuel). Not very typical platformer mechanics.

Thanks man.

Yes you will. ;)

Here's some screenies as mentioned earlier:

I've started to make the main character appear less flat, but I'm still not done with all the animations and poses yet.

Also changed up the HUD to be a bit less bleh.

This game looks good, I hope that you manage to get zip lines and wall hanging because that would be awesome.

Thanks. Will do.

Thanks. I think I can do a zipline pretty easily, but wall hanging/ledge grabbing is tripping me up a bit. I'm trying to find a way to make it economical. Either something that can be done on any and every edge, or something that can only be done in certain places which might require lots of zones and careful map design.

The mechanics sound interesting. I'll have to try this out if ever I get a few free minutes. Starting to use photoshop now I see. :D
